Angy,

I'm doing OK, and I'm feeling good. For the last two nights, I've even been able to sleep all night, without having to get up a single time during the night, to change pouches. That's a big improvement, after a couple of months of having to get up at least twice a night, (for the first 6 weeks), and at least once per night, (for the last couple of weeks). I think my small intestine is learning how to do not only it's job, but also part of the work that the colon used to do. Life is good.

You're right - it certainly has been a while since we've had a chat, hasn't it. It's always tough to find a time that's suitable, because of all the time zone differences. It's already 11 pm in Scotland, isn't it, and it's a bit early to schedule one for members in the US. Do you want to try to schedule one for Monday night, or would you rather wait until the weekend? Do you still have Friday's off? If so, we could schedule it for Thursday night. Friday nights are usually pretty slow here on the board, and so is the weekend.

Good ! I'm glad to hear your coping better with your condition..can't have been good having to get up more than you needed to to change your bag..certainly would have an effect on your sleep...sounds like your body has settled down from the op now...that's good news...hope you stay well tex!!

Yes Thursday nights are good, I'm easy with whatever time really. It would be good to have time for most members who can log in to enjoy the chat..good for everyone to get things off their chest too...and also have a banter lol!!!let us know when and the time tex!!!

Dear Tex,

Great your nights are getting back to normal. I am frankly in awe of your positive approach. If/when I have to face something as tough as you have had to face your example will, I hope, pull me through. Thanks for being you.

Love, ANT

Tex,
It sounds like you've had a lot of health issues in your life. I can't believe how positive you remain. I hope some of that rubs off on me. Do you have a good support system around you.

Well, I've always felt that I'm lucky to be alive, after some of the things that have happened to me, so it's been easy to feel positive, because of that. Besides, I can't think of any advantages that might be associated with being negative. LOL.

Yes, I've been fortunate to have always had the support that I needed, and most of it has been from members of this board, of course. We are truly a family, here.

I appreciate your kind words.

Hiya Tex,

I wondered just how you were going to answer GLG's question in light of the quote at the end of your posts! LOL! (By the way, I love that quote!) Anyway, you "did good" - it truly is our family here online that keeps us healthy and sane! Thanks for the reminder.

Love,

Polly

problem with utis

Post by maddiegrace »

Hi everyone. I haven't visited this site for awhile. Collagenous Colitis is still with me everyday and has been for the past three years. I am controlling it somewhat by eating less,, using Immodium and lately taking a light dose of librax. The librax helps some I'm just not sure how long my dr. will let me use it. My latest problems is having recurring UTIs. I wonder if anyone else has this problem. I was at the emergency clinic this past weekend with yet another one and the dr. there said he thinks the colitis with explosive D makes it almost impossible not to have this problem. Of course the antibiotics that are requirred for the infections only make the cc worse. I wonder if any of you have this problem. I just cannot imagine what to do about it. I would appreciate any input you may have. I hope all are having a good Monday morning. maddiegrace

Maddie,

This is a really good question. I know some here have had problems with UTIs. What you say makes so much sense, especially in women, where the anus is so close to the urethra and bacterial transfer could easily occur. And you know, UTIs are usually caused by the E. coli bacteria from the colon and can even occur without any symptoms at all. In fact, it is possible to have longstanding silent UTIs with the first sign of the problem being full-blown kidney failure. Maybe MCers (especially women) should have routine urine cultures. (They don't even seem to do routine basic urinalysis any more).

Thanks for getting my mind going so early in the morning!

Hi MaddieGrace,

Sorry to hear of the problems. As Polly has pointed out, the risk of UTIs can be quite significant with this disease. Have you tried D-Mannose? For information on how it works, please refer to this thread, and the links that are listed there:

http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewt ... t=dmannose

Good luck with this, and please keep us advised of your progress.

Polly,

What else could I say - you were my lifeline with medical reality when I was in the hospital, and the support from everyone on the board here, helped to provide more than enough incentive and inertia to ensure that I was able to pull through. With all that support, even though my body might have been feeling somewhat miserable, in my mind, I felt absolutely great.

MaddieGrace,

I had 6 or 7 UTI's during the first year of my D symptoms prior to dx w/MC. I was put on a massive dose of antibiotics which was the drug that is often used for MAP. Clearly contamination could be a factor, I suppose, but I also had other signs of staph like infections at that time. I'm convinced I had MAP, perhaps still do. There's been lots of discussion on MAP here if you search for it.

Connie
Resolved MC symptoms successfully w/L-Glutamine, Probiotics and Vitamins, GF since 8/'09. DX w/MC 10/'09.

DUring flares, i use damp washers rather than toilet paper. (which is what is recommended to mothers for new borns)

yes this causes a heap of washing, i originally started it as a means of eliminating skin irritation, what i have found is that ensures that the area is totally clean and has possibly saved me from UTI.

I wash them in eucalyptus and cleaning vinegar to ensure they are bacteria free.
