best way to get off entocort?

Post by GLJ »

Hello,
I've decided Entocort is not for me. I think it is causes side effects that I don't wish to have. I was on it 9 mg. for about 8 weeks. Then I went down to 6mg. for 2 weeks and now I went down to 3mg. for the last couple days. When can I stop completely and safely. It might be causing me a little extra anxiety right now I'm not sure. What side effects has anyone experienced coming off of it?

Hi,

If you've only been taking it for about 2 or 3 months, withdrawing from it shouldn't cause any cortisol problems, (because of adrenal dependency), so the only side effect that withdrawal might cause, would be a relapse of MC symptoms. If you've been faithfully following the GF diet, (or if you're not gluten-sensitive), then you may not experience a full relapse of symptoms - it depends on how much your gut has been able to heal. Entocort EC does not cause the adrenal dependency that the other corticosteroids, (such as Prednisone), tend to cause, because only about 10 to 15% of the budesonide in Entocort is absorbed into the bloodstream, and it takes years for that level to establish a dependency, in most people.

Thanks!
My cortisol levels are already above the normal range and I didn't want to increase this. So do you think I'll be fine to just stop the 3 mg. even after just a couple of days?

I have been faithful following a GF and DF diet. I know I'm not going to have total control over this yet but right now I am having nausea, loss of appetite, and anxiety issues that are causing more problems so I think getting off Entocort could take 1 factor out of the situation. I've never felt like it helped me that much in the first place.

My GI prescribes 9 mg of Entocort for 6-8 weeks only and then stop. He's never mentioned tapering off. I take it for the 6-8 weeks and then just stop. Usually doesn't help till after the 6 weeks, and I usually do not relapse. Don't know if that helps, and I've never been on it longer than 8 weeks at a time.

Good! I'll just stop taking it then. Thanks for your input.

GLJ,

With Entocort, if you can't tell that it's helping, it probably isn't. With the diet, though, if you can't tell that it's helping, that may not mean anything, because many of us have found that it can take a long time, and then one day, to our surprise, we were in remission.

I agree, there shouldn't be any repercussions if you just stop taking it, since you haven't been taking it long enough for your adrenals to develop a dependency.
