An Eventful Day!
DH and I were sitting in the living room and kitchen today when we suddenly heard a loud noise, like a train going by. Then we heard a loud crash and the house and ground shook. We looked out the front window and saw our 200-year-old oak tree laying prone in front of the house.
When we went outside, we saw that a couple of major limbs had fallen on the house. The fall damaged the corner of the house and put a foot-size hole in our bedroom. We then realized we were lucky to be alive. One of the tree's limbs had been just above the roof. I think that when the tree fell, the limb over the roof caused the tree to deflect more to the front yard than to the house. The main trunk of the tree landed on the grass.
Neighbors a street away heard the noise and came to see what happened. A tree company came within an hour of being called and was able to remove much of the tree before dusk.
Our insurance is paying for everything but our $500 deductible and removal of tree parts that fell on the ground. The damaged part of the roof will need to be repaired and re-roofed. Home restorers put a plastic tarp over the affected areas. The living room has a crack in the wall corner, ceiling and south wall. The picture windows in our family room were smashed. No glass entered the room because we have plastic solar protection on the interior window. DD and her daughters are sleeping there; thank goodness there aren't any glass shards.
Luckily DD2 wasn't home and her daughters weren't riding on the sidewalk or playing in the yard. It could have been much, much worse. The Building Works superintendent said if the main trunk had fallen on the house, it would have destroyed it.
This is the third home crisis in our family in just a couple of weeks. I now believe that bad luck comes in threes. My SIL had lightening strike her home and DD1 had a toilet overflow and damage her oak flooring, carpeting, and doors. She sold her home last month and is moving on Tuesday.
We are happy to be alive and thank God that we were kept safe.

You are very fortunate that there were no injuries and that the tree did not do more damage to the house. The roof and window are minor when you think of what could have happened.

OMG Gloria!! What a scary thing to have happen! And I too am so glad that it wasn't much worse! It sounds like your home is livable, and hopefully the repair work will be taken care of promptly.
From those pictures, I can see that it's a HUGE tree. If it had hit your house, I can see where it would have been destroyed, like you say, not to mention injury to those inside! The inside of the trunk looks decayed, but the branches all look green and healthy, no doubt hiding it's problems.
Those of us with large trees near our homes (like me) will be motivated to take a careful look..........

I have to agree - looking at the size of that tree, it could have been a lot worse. I'm sure glad it wasn't.
That tree is kinda like me - I look OK on the outside, but my guts are all rotten.
I'm glad everyone was safe.

Gloria thats quite scary.... Most improtantly you and your family are safe, the house can easily be repaired.
I will have to admit I have a 150 year old oak that has made me nervous, but I can't quite bring myself to cutting it down; I even built my back deck around it and it's size is somewhat like the one your pictures show and its also quite close to the house.

Gloria! I'm so sorry. Well if things truly come in three I should be good to go for sometime. Let's hope they don't come in multiple of three's. I'm so glad that you and your family are all safe. I'm sorry that you are having to deal with all this. Life has a bizarre way of throwing stuff at us, doesn't it? Hope your learning to dance in the rain as I am as well

Thank you all...I'm much less rattled today and feel safe being in my house.
Joe, yes, we will dearly miss the tree. We've lived here for 38 years and have become accustomed to it's shade. The sun beat down on our house relentlessly today. This is the third and last mighty oak to be removed from our property. We lost another one about 6 years ago because it had a crack in the trunk that DH noticed was getting longer. It was on the parkway and the village removed it. I couldn't bear to see them take it down, so I left when they arrived. It shaded us from the west and we've missed it ever since. The third tree fell before we built our house (thank Heaven). Our neighbor's boys were going to camp in the then vacant property, but decided not to. The tree fell during the night. I have a feeling we had a weak stock of old oak trees. Many of our neighbors have old oaks, too and are pretty nervous.
A landscaper who lives down the street told us that he sees fallen oak trees all the time. He said he would never have one near his house. He does have a couple in the parkway, though - you don't tear them down without a good reason.
DH had noticed a bulge separating the bark of the trunk just a couple of weeks ago. We were going to call someone to look at it, but DD came, and time slipped away.
Yes, Polly, I think our guardian angel was definitely watching over us and nudged that tree just enough to protect us.
Hopefully I'll be able to sleep well during thunderstorms for the first time since we've lived here.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
I'm a bit late catching up with this.
Gloria, I'm SO very happy you and your family weren't hurt but it is sad to lose a tree like that. I hope the repairs to your house progress quickly and are done to your satisfaction.
Also, hope the "3rd thing" ended it.
Love, Shirley
