Naty it started in the late 1800's with a labor union in New York city as a holday to celebrate the laborer. It was adopted as federal holiday in 1894 by president Grover Cleavland as a conciliatory move to assuage the labor groups after a clash with US marshals (federal police) and military forces over the Pullman strike that resulted in labor union members deaths.

Even us aussies get a labour day holiday (first monday in May)
straight from wikipedia Labor Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.
