Paleo diet question

Post by Deb »

A while back I did a DNA test that confirmed my suspicions that my body would do
best on a low carb diet. Does any one know that if by eating paleo (especially all the
fruits) it might actually not be the best choice in that case or does something else (metabolic?) seem to happen?

Deb,

As far as the fruits and/or veggies that you eat on the Paleo, that is up to you. I try to eat some fruit every day but that is my choice. I don't see how this could hurt you since you know what you don't want to eat.

Exactly, as Jan says, you're always free to pick and choose the foods that you prefer, that are correct for the diet, just as the original paleo people did. And, remember that the paleo diet is the original low carb diet, the one that our digestive system actually evolved with, and the only diet that was validated by roughly 2 million years of use before any of the other diets were ever dreamed up by self-appointed "diet experts". How far wrong could anyone go on a paleo diet?

Hi Deb, and welcome to the "cave"!

Good question! I agree with Jan and Tex. Actually, there is a big difference, I believe, between "nutritious" carbs, like fruits and veggies, and what I'll call "empty carbs", like cookies, cakes, pasta. In the long run, the body may absorb them all as "carb" with regard to calories burned; however, with fruits/veggies you are getting a huge bonus - tons of essential vitamins/minerals/fiber and other essential nutrients. Not to mention that fruits/veggies help to keep the body basic (pH over 7), which reduces calcium loss from the bones, etc. Empty carbs are acidic to the body, promote metabolic syndrome, which leads to diabetes and obesity, contain no real nutrition, etc.

BTW, what was the DNA test you had?.....I don't think I'm familiar with that.

Love,

Polly

Thanks for your responses. After a significant weight gain after an early hysterectomy 25 years ago my weight has been an issue (25 lbs the first year).Low carb eating seems to be the best way for me to lose and maintain so I've avoided most fruits except berries and cantaloupe. I wondered, though, if a person were eating mostly paleo, if the enzymes from all the raw fruits might help my body deal better with the carb issue. I have been eating a lot of rice since the MC started and am again gaining unneeded weight.

Hi Deb,

I see the test was done with a cheek swab. Did you get a gene profile back? Or something else? Just curious. What did they say about your exercise routine?

Polly

Deb,

That article is SO interesting. Thanks for sharing. Personally, I have found it to be true. When I eat totally paleo (no rice or potatoes) I am almost never hungry. I have to actually think about when it is time to eat. I guess because my snacks are mainly protein - meat, nuts, etc., and no processed sugar at all. When I eat rice, potatoes, or other foods with a high glycemic index, I CRAVE sweets and am always thinking about them.....constantly. Have you found this to be true?

Love,

Polly

P.S. I can't get over the fact that folks on the Mediterrean diet ate about 500 more calories a day than those on the paleo diet. This is a HUGE difference and further proof that our bodies are better suited to the paleo diet, IMHO.

Polly,
I've definitely found the cravings to be true, especially if I eat breads, pasta and potatoes.
Rice doesn't seem to trigger cravings as much in me.
I think paleo eating would be an option for me (except I would miss butter!). I know the
goal is no dairy but might ghee be a better option.
