Made My Own Lip Balm Today

It was surprisingly easy, not to mention inexpensive. I made a dozen tubes for around $5. They are made of candelilla wax (instead of beeswax), coconut oil, and shea butter. Next time I make them I will put some essential oil, like almond oil, in them because they smell like shea butter. Not bad, but not good either.

They are slightly harder than Burt's Bees lip balm, but the essential oil may change that, too. All in all, I am pretty pleased with them, especially since I am no longer smearing soybean oil on my lips several times a day.

That's great Marliss! A safe and affordable way to keep lips hydrated is something so important especially during the winter. I've been using Burt's Bees or coconut oil. You are well on your way to entrepreneurship if want it.

Do you think there is a way to add sheer color safely too? I may have to look into this as well. Thanks for posting.

That's a good question, Kelly, that I've wondered about myself. I've been studiously ignoring what may be in my lipstick pencil, lol.

I was using Burt's Bees until Mary Beth pointed out it has soy in it.

Yeah, I have now ditched the Burt's Bees and am sticking with vasoline and coconut oil but they are too heavy and greasy.

I was reading somewhere that you can use melted chocolate chips or beet juice to add color to lip balms. I don't know how that would affect the texture of the end product though.

I also saw a site that has lip pigments and micas but have no idea how safe they are but they do have msds sheets for their products.

UGH! I didn't realize Burt's Bees has soy! THANKS.
I thought it was OK in the GF, DF, SF book. It won't be their first mistake.
