Question about an over the counter medication?

Post by MAC123 »

I tend to have very bad cramps during my period. Before being diagnosed, I used to take ibuprofen, which helped quite a bit. I have since tried taking tylenol and do not get any relief from it. I know it's best to stay away from NSAIDs, so I am trying to find an alternative that may work a little better than the tylenol I've been trying.

My friend recommended this:
http://www.midol.com/menstrual_complete_caps.html

It doesn't appear to be marketed as an NSAID. I know some of you seem to be quite knowledgeable in medication so do you think I could tolerate that?

I should also mention that my MC is fairly controlled with pepto doses and by eliminating dairy. I still consume gluten/soy, as I do not seem to be negatively affected by it.

Thanks for the help! :)

That product appears to be nothing more than Extra Strength Tylenol, (500mg of acetaminophen), plus caffeine and another stimulant. Yes, it's not an NSAID, (since Tylenon is not an NSAID), so you should be able to tolerate it. I doubt that it will be any more effective than Extra Strength Tyleonl, plus a cup of coffee, though.

Almost everyone says that Tylenol is ineffective for treating their pain issues. However, back when I was reacting, I often had debilitating migraines, along with severe pain in my joints, and especially my neck. I discovered that if I would take a couple of Extra Strength Tylenol, with a meal, or a snack, (never on an empty stomach), before the pain reached severe levels, it would almost always control my symptoms well enough that I could perform pretty much normally. After 4 or 5 hours, if the pain began to escalate again, I would take a couple more, and that would usually get me through the day. Taking Tylenol on an empty stomach never worked for me, and I suspect that is probably true for most people. Also, if I waited to long, (IOW, if the pain was already at a severe level before I tried to treat it), Tylenol would not be very effective for me.

As long as I took it soon enough, though, and always with food, it worked quite well for me. If it doesn't seem to be taking effect as I've suggested, drink some apple juice. For me at least, the malic acid in apple juice seems to sort of supercharge the acetaminophen, and seems to make it work faster and more effectively. Of course, as they say, YMMV.

Are your cramps debilitating? Mine are, to such an extent that my doctor eventually prescribed Tramadol so I would be able to work. This might be an option for you. However, I must say that I did not think I was reacting to soy or dairy either, until I removed them from my diet. In the few months that I have been GF and SF, I have noticed a severe lessening in the severity of my cramping.

It took me years to go GF. Trust me, I am very stubborn. Since I have, though, I have not had a single flare or even a day of D.

Hope this helps,
