Nocturnal Diarrhea

Post by catarific »

Are any of you plagued with Nocturnal Diarrhea that comes on in the middle of the night?

I know for myself - I usually am awoken about 1 to 3 a.m. and have to go to the bathroom either with watery, semi hard or even regular urgency. This might continue once an hour up to about 6:30 to 7:00 a.m. It is really annoying and it so disturbs trying to get a good night's sleep. I have never had an accident - but you sure know that your colon is calling you....

Is there anything you can do about this? I know I am not bothered all day - but somewhere between 7 to 8 hours after eating - this comes on.....

The only suggestion I have is what I used to do: Take some Immodium when you go to bed. Before I got my diet figured out, I would fall asleep on the toilet some nights!

Wake up, wipe drool off face, bang on legs to wake them up, stagger back to bed, put old towels down over sheets, lie down, wake up, run for toilet, repeat!!!

Good Luck,

I tried a few things during my sleepless nights - I was lucky that phase only lasted about a week. Things that worked for me could very well not work for you at all... but I had luck with skipping meals (short-term strategy!); having nothing but chicken broth (that was actually pleasant and comforting, but again... not sustainable long-term); extreme diet limitation (bananas, rice, chicken broth, applesauce - but not even all of those in any given day). Pepto-Bismol also helped me, but has been very poorly tolerated by so many people here, so might be a bad idea when you're already low.

Hopefully you're about to turn the corner and get some answers. And some sleep.

Wishing you strength in the meantime,

Sara

It must be something you are eating...are you on any meds? The all night diarrhea will definitely take it's toll, be careful not to let that go on too long.

In the early days when i was sorting out my diet this happened ALOT! thankfully now it hardly happens. it may happen if i try a new ingredient but i dont do this very often. One of the motivators to stick to a strict eating plan

I also found eating a bigger meal at lunch and having a smaller easy to digest meal at dinner/tea/evening meal time worked really well.

Me Too!

I've only known for about a month that I have LC (however, I've had IBS since I was a child with lactose intolerance)...and one of my complaints to the Dr. before they did a colonoscopy was nausea and diarrhea (sometimes heart racing too for about an hour when the fun begins) in the middle of the night lasting until sunrise, before I felt 'empty' enough and not so nauseous I could go back to sleep...

I am thinking, that its something in my diet that just needs to be removed to stop the nocturnal trips.

Being a newbie to this whole thing, that's all I can offer...maybe its something you are semi intolerant to, so your body can sort of digest it and pull nutrients from it and then your body goes into shock mode and wants it out...and it doesn't care what time it is or if you were sleeping.

I'm sure you have already done this, but maybe a food diary might help pinpoint if you think it may be something you ate...
