He was a legendary sheriff in Tennessee, who inspired the movie Walking Tall. If I recall correctly, Rock Hudson played the part--I could be wrong, though, it's been a long time since I saw that movie.

Love,
Wayne

P S He probably wouldn't respond to an invitation, anyway. I think he died several decades ago, didn't he?

Rock Hudson did die, but I am sure the spirit of Buford Pusser is still walking tall down there in Tennessee. I know. Some of my relatives are there.

What was the name of the sheriff in Cannonball Run?

That would be Chief Spiro T. Edsel played by Peter Boyle in Cannonball Run?

It is Buford T. Pusser and the movie was Walking Tall. His motto was "walk tall and carry a big stick". It was Joe Don Baker that played him in the film. Pusser died in 1974 - Baker is still alive.

Hmmmmmmmmm. I seem to have missed that one. It must have been ahead of it's time, since you weren't even born then.

I thought Teddy Roosevelt said "Walk softly and carry a big stick." Or maybe that was "Speak softly...."

Teddy's exact quote was:

"Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far."

One of my favourite quotes by him was:

"If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month."

I like Eleanor's quote the best..."No one can make you feel inferior unless you give them permission to do so."

She was a very wise lady.

How did this topic get from Buford Pusser to Eleanor Roosevelt?

Anyway, she has always been on of my favorite people. When my parents and I were in Hong Kong a long time ago and were sitting in the lobby of the Peninsula Hotel drinking tea with all the other fancy people. There was a stir in the crowd. Being a little kid I jumped up on a chair to see what was happening. It was Eleanor herself. She was an old woman by that time and dressed in quite dressy clothes for a party being held in her honor. Complete with a hat! I looked down at her feet to see what kind of shoes she was wearing and she was quite happily and comfortably wearing SNEAKERS!! My mother was horrified by this breach in propriety, but I thought it was really cool. From that day forward, I have always insited on wearing comfortable shoes no matter how out of style or ugly they were. I mean if Eleanor Roosevelt could do it......

Sally,

You ask
How did this topic get from Buford Pusser to Eleanor Roosevelt?
.

You gotta remember, you're dealing with a bunch of "sick" people here--we're liable to say almost anything, and we tend to have rather unique viewpoints. LOL.

Incidentally, that was an incredible revelation about about the sneakers. I wouldn't have guessed that in a million years.

Heck, some of us never figured out why we were talking about Buford Pusser in the first place
