SigmaChat? :conversation:

Post by tex »

Does anyone know anything about SigmaChat? I found a way that a SigmaChat Module can be integrated into this discussion board. So the question is, is SigmaChat any good, and would many people be interested in a feature such as that?

Yes, it's an instant messaging service, and it's apparently designed to fit in with discussion boards such as this, but I don't have any experience with any instant messaging services, let alone SigmaChat.

To use it, a member would have to initially sign up for the SigmaChat service, (which can be either free, or premium), but I believe it may even be possible that I can set it up so that if you were logged in to this board, you wouldn't even have to log in again to use the chat service.

Know a little bit about instant chat. Lannie talks to a group of friends- about 7 of them. Anytime she logs on to the computer it tells her and her other friends that are online. Remember, these are 11 year olds. They have instant chats all the time.

It's a very interesting concept. It just might work with our age group. Give it a try. It's fun to chat in "real time"

I'm not familiar with SigmaChat but use MSN and Yahoo quite often. Lots of fun and FREE! Sure beats phone bills!

Larry will be watching TV and wondering why I'm LMAO (I'm talking on-line to someone). Can be loads of fun!

Interesting concept!

I am not chat-savvy; I know my son and a few of his buddies communicate that way sometimes but they will try ANYTHING. Had to send some older boys home a few weeks ago because it turned out they had been "helping" my son find some "adult" material..... I guess it is time to figure out how to put some filters on this computer. Or perhaps they will learn all about sex education via the computer and be much better off than with their original innocense?! Question is, I think, which sites to direct them to and which sites to prevent them from finding - I'm not terribly savvy in this department either.... Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Karen

I have used Yahoo and one of the other IM's. I don't know anything about the one you mentioned, Wayne.

I have to learn how to use IM's in a way that doesn't drive me nuts - LOL.
It's nice to do "real time" but I tend to just sit there and wait for a reply when my mind is on whatever I was doing in the first place. Stupid, I know. I rarely turn mine on anymore.

It would be different for me, I think, if it were a chatroom (I don't know if it is or not) because if you go there it's with the intention of chatting. LOL

Does that confuse you enough?? I know I'm wierd.

Hi Shirley,

Yes, it's a chatroom. You would be able to see a list of those members who were online at any time.

I don't know anything about it Wayne, but I did go to the site and check out the options and the demo. Looks pretty cool.

I took a look at the SigmaChat site and it looks okay to me. I'm not all that fond of chat rooms because I can't type that fast. But why not give it a try? We can always dump it if we don't like it.

Sally,

That's my problem--I'm a slow typer, and if I try to speed up, the typos get out of hand. Also, I like to take a little time to think about what I'm trying to say, sometimes.

Since Peg checked out the demo, (I didn't even notice that they had one), and seems to offer her endorsement, I'll try to set it up, as soon as I have enough spare time. As you say, we can always get rid of it, if it turns out to be unpopular.

Love,
Wayne

Tex, Sal and others.....

When using the IM programs, it has been my experience that abreviations and such are used to speed up the typing and typos are the norm! I wouldn't worry about the little things.

I just tried the demo on Sigmachat and had a little conversation with a man. He said that he used the free program and found it very nice. He was changing over to one that cost $$ because he needed to chat in Arabic.
