Small bowel series

Post by Mendy »

So I had the small bowel series (the follow through) done today. It only took 20 minutes for the barium to go completely through my stomach and small bowel. Otherwise my small bowel looked good.

They did write on the report about how fast it went through my system, but didn't find any evidence of any other things in my small bowel.

So, other than a positive stain for mastocytic enterocolitis, and a positive serology for Crohns I'm at a loss..

Next step for me is the pill cam. I really would just like some answers:(

Mendy the small bowel follow thru can only look for significant changes in the bowels. It is not good at being able to visualize the sores that crohns starts presenting with. The SBF is generally good for finding fistulas and other significant changes. When crohns first begins it is usually a diffuse area of inflammation that will start to form ulcer like sores that if left untreated often form fistulas.

The pill camera will be able to see the changes in the surface tissues and any early sores.

FYI its great your addressing this early before any major changes have taken place. My crohns was not found until a 9 inch area of my small bowel had enough damage that it required surgical removal.

By addressing any dietary issues and taking any meds that are potentially needed you should be able to keep this in check.

Best wishes Mendy it sounds like you are on the right path

Joe

PS like you I had a fast transit time of 14 minutes

My doctor is really thinking Crohns disease. I just want to get a diagnosis so I can get going on medication so I can finally start to feel better:( This has taken its toll on me this year. I appreciate your response as it does make me feel better.

They did the first xray at 20 minutes so not sure really how fast it was already through..lol

The lady doing the test did tell me that was common in people with Crohns disease.

:) I appreciate you taking the time to respond! Thank you so much!

That's what we are here for... While it sounds scary crohns when managed with diet and meds if necessary is something you can cope with.

For me I probably had active crohns for several years, but the doctors just did not look for it. Once I started the Imuran, I felt like a new person. A good part of my energy has come back and I am now doing things I did not think possible just a year ago.

Keep in mind though that diet will be an important part of the health puzzle. Meds while helpful, work even better when we have addressed our dietary sensitivities.

When I first started down this road, I had an early attitude of trying to manage this using the dietary tools only. I have come to realize that we need to use all the tools that we have at our disposal. For me that currently involves accupuncture (surprisingly helpful), dietary adjustments(GF,DF,SF) and the immune suppressant Imuran. If I start to not use one of these tools I notice that I do not feel as well.

Welcome to the group Mendy, we look forward to hearing about your progress
