Dang! With 'taters and 'maters on the hit list, as so many newbies ask, "What will we eat?" LOL.

I'll bet that book will be popular.

Thanks for posting the info.

LOL, Gabes - I believe I could contribute a chapter or two!

I respect Dr. Cordain greatly, but seem to be marching to the beat of a different drummer, even though I'm the strictest Paleo eater in my own personal acquaintances (helps that I'm the *only* one!). (Hey, maybe I should get to work on that PP Paleo project!) I would love to read his articles, and found his Powerpoint presentation on MS riveting, early in my MC journey. I also read his first book, and looked through the cookbook. (We do plan and shop, but not in a way that those 7-day plans tend to help.) I look forward to skimming this, though - the thoughts on exercise and lifestyle are interesting, and I'd be curious about his take on supplements.

I've really found a lot of the Paleo resources on the 'Net helpful, either for recipe ideas, or a philosophical approach. There's something for everyone - busy moms, fitness enthusiasts, serious students of the science, people more interested in a light-hearted approach... as well as people seeking relief from various conditions, autoimmune or otherwise, or just hoping for optimal health.

About the 'taters and 'maters... I wonder. As I understand it, this has to do with the lectins, rather than with the antibody responses we have, as those to gluten and casein. I am supposing that this could mean that 'occasional' potatoes and tomatoes are not incompatible with health (though, as with most foods, relying on them excessively carries risk?).

I feel better when I eat "less" potatoes. I was thinking that was primarily because of the carbs.

Sara,

OK, I give up - which drummer are you marching to? LOL! I think you are correct about taters and maters and the lectins. And I believe quite a few people (even non-MCers) have problems with nightshades. Isn't it recommended to avoid them if one has arthritis, for example? Like Maggie, I was always a potato queen. However, MRT showed me that I am sensitive to both maters and taters. Sigh. I think I miss taters the most (after cheese, of course). Must be my Irish genes! That essay by Cordain on tomatoes, vaccines, and AI diseases is intriguing.

Tex, good point about the newbie question "what will we eat?" I guess my quickie response would be "more PROTEIN!".

Hugs,

Polly

Thanks for sharing Polly. I think I will get a copy. I am curious about the nightshade article and may order that one. Before I went GF I was getting arthritis in my fingers and eliminating gluten seemed to help quite a bit. Now I am noticing some worsening of arthritis in my fingers and suspect nightshades. I was yellow for solanine on my MRT and gave up potatoes for a while but have gradually added potatoes back and think they are the culprit. Sigh.

I read The Paleo Answer and thought it was great. He focused on new research over the last 10 years, so some info is different from his original book, such as:

1. He talked about saturated fats in the light of new evidence that they aren't all created equal, so he's more lenient on some higher fat meats.

2. He talked about research on caloric restriction and longevity. He also talked about how intermitttent fasting is more paleo-like than 3 meals per day. Hunter gatherers primarily ate one meal per day, with some minimal snacking in between.

3. I read in there that some waxed fruits/veg may contain whey - beware dairy intolerant PP.

4. He mentioned Advanced Glycation End Products, which form in our bodies due to chemical reactions of sugars with protein. They are associated with almost all chronic diseases. The paleo diet tends to be lower AGEs, but he does recommend not cooking meats at high temps (searing, frying etc) - slow cooking reduced AGEs

5. Intersting chapter on why vegetarian diets are not healthy

6. Intersting chapter on paleo for babies, kids and teens

7. Updated info on why dairy products are hazardous to our health

8. Lots of info about Vitamin D interspersed throughout book, like how grains impair vitamin D metabolism. He also thinks the only supplements we need are vitamin D and fish oil. he has a whole chapter on why vitamin supplementation is not recommended

9. Lots of good info on why avoiding beans and potatoes is necessary. Both cause leaky gut. Also talks about lectins.

I encourage PP interested in paleo to read this book. I give it 2 thumbs up.

Hi Mary Beth,

I too just finished reading the new Paleo book. I loved it, thought it was much more informative then the older version. I have only been doing Paleo for about 6 weeks and I can honestly say I feel like my old self again. Who would have thought that all the things we put in our mouths have such an impact on our over all health! My family and friends cant believe the difference it has made in my life. Two of my friends without any health problems have just started the Paleo. We all say the same thing "Its mind boggling how the old way of eating was really so UNHEALTHY". WE all thought that we were eating healthy. Boy were we wrong!

I haven't gone Paleo yet, but my oldest daughter has been on that diet for 4 years now and she swears by it. I'm beginning to think that eliminating all nightshades may be the direction I need to go.

just a thought and maybe no one has the answers....

for quite a few of us there are items that we can not have, does he talk about modified paleo? if so, are the benefits minimised if people are doing modified

re supplements - if the people who are following paleo have compromised digestion (and it has been an issue for many years due to an IBD) will paleo fix the leaky gut, and rebuild the gut so that nutritent digestion is comparable with someone who has not had any IBD?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to re-recommend Dr. Cordains book for newbies. Even if you don't go paleo I think it is worthwhile for anyone to read who has inflammatory bowel disease. If your S.O. is one to pick up and read a book that is lying around it does a good job explaining why wheat is not good for us.
