Hi Everyone,
I re-tested with MRT last week. I have been curious for a while and had been holding out for the changes they are making, but had a freebie test and decided to go ahead and use it. Here's the thread with both my results from August 2009 (when I was very sick) and now http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewt ... 928#112928 As you can see I have far fewer reactive foods than a few years ago.
I feel like I am in remission from mast cell problems and have been for about 5-6 months. I no longer have D or any histamine symptoms and I am very, very thankful for this. My flu shot reaction lasted 4 years!! I still worry about a possible flare-up, but for now things are calm in that area. I still carry an epi pen though, and always will.
Because I was feeling so good I added back some foods that I was previosuly avoiding. I was eating beans occasionally, I ate some dairy (a little cheese, butter and cream, and oh boy did I savor every bite), yeast, tapioca, lettuce, turkey, spicy food and wine. Nothing seemed to bother me, or so it seemed in the short run. However, over time I began to notice that my fingers joints at the top were again bulging and my OA was returning. Of course I knew it was from the diet changes, so I decided to re-test.
Some of the results are interesting. I am now reactive to caffeine and I wasn't before. But I already knew this because over the summer when I was flaring with mast cell and hyper adrenergic POTS I got off of caffeine for my high blood pressure - I think it really helped to calm things down.
The other surprise was maple. I previosuly never used alot of maple, but started to use it as a sweetener based on my first MRT. Ha, now I am reactive to it!
Shrimp was high green before and now it is red. I don't love shrimp, but my son does, so we eat it occasionally - I won't miss it. But I am so glad turkey is now green for me, but I will be sure not to overdo it. Pork was previosuly low green now it is yellow. Beef is about the same and will always be inflammatory for me. Chicken only moved up slightly from high green to yellow. Now that my mast cells are under control I need to eat more seafood.
Lettuce was previously red (they test iceburg - yuk) and now it is yellow. I seem to do OK with other types of lettuce, but my fave salad green is arugula, which is untested.
Both times I reacted to alot of fruits or they were high green. Sigh.
After reading Dr. Cordain's latest book, The paleo Answer, I was inspired to get back on track with Paleo. After Christmas vacation I gave up dairy, beans, potatoes. Just by doing this for the last week I have already noticed a reduction in my finger joints. The only grain I eat is a little rice. Now I will do my new MRT diet and hopefully reverse the problem completely.
I shudder to think what would have happened if i didn't address diet this time around. I think I was getting leaky gut again (dairy, beans, potatoes per Dr. Cordain). I learned my lesson . . . even though I had been feeling great, I shouldn't have strayed so far from paleo.

Hi Mary Beth,
I have been wondering about how you're doing and was very pleased to come across this nice update from you. It sure sounds like great news all around - congratulations!!! How is your new pup doing - any improvements in the behavior department???
Anyhow, it is so interesting to note that your sensitivities have changed. That is definitely a pattern with me - what's safe today, may not be safe tomorrow, and (hopefully) vice versa. Anyhow, Paleo seems to be the safest all around, and thankfully there are many goodies to eat on that plan as well. I just had a brunch of snow crab and avocado - yum. I find that the fewer items I include in a meal, the better I do.
Like you, I was feeling so good for a while that I started to include questionable food again (Udi's bread, rice milk, earth balance spread, etc.) which all seemed pretty innocent. I also tested a tiny piece of cheese now and then, and was fine. Anyhow, my BM's started to get worse, culminating in a horrible "blow-out" a couple of days after Thanksgiving when I decided to do a dairy challenge. Although I recovered from the "trauma" withing a few days, my BM's have remained stubbornly soft/liquid, so now I'm back to keeping a log and eating only unprocessed foods.
I hope that bringing more seafood into your diet will agree with you, both psychologically and physically. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way that your remission remains stable and you continue to feel well.
Love,
Kari

Thanks Kari. You are right in that sensitivities can change over time. I think eating seasonally really helps in that way - it's rotation, but on a bigger scale.
Sorry to hear about your dairy issue. I feel your pain. Dairy was much harder for me to give up than gluten. I agree that paleo eating is the way to go.
Hugs,
Mary Beth

Kari, I just recieved my MRT results. While I reacted to all 11 foods tested by Enterolab, I only had one red area on MRT. Hops. I have been eating hemp protein powder because I can't tolerate any of the others. No meat seems safe for me.
The yellow area included tylenol, crab, green pea, leek, lentil, millet, MSG, oat, papaya, sweet potato & salicylic acid
Do you think that because I've been eating the same foods for a few weeks my body is starting to react to them? Is that how it works?
Thanks!
