Post by judy »

Has anyone successfully tried food combining? Thought I'd give it a try. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

What do you mean with "foodcombining"?

Judy, I did try food combining during my first flare once my symptoms were obvious but before I had a diagnosis. There were some helpful things- like don't eat fruit at the end of the meal, eat it alone and 3 hours after a meal. Those small changes alone helped minimize gas and bloating. It was interesting to learn what foods create acid and which ones are more alkaline and will neutralize acid. I think if you already know your food sensitivities then the strategies can be helpful. If you don't know your food sensitivities then I think the food-combining alone will not be as effective for MC as it might be for IBS. I think if you have GERD it would definitely be worth a look. I was surprised at some of the foods that create more acid or prompt your body to create more acid in order to break them down.

The books I have are "Great Taste: No Pain", by Sherry Brescia. She is a 'health researcher' and writer by trade. According to her bio she suffered with debilitating IBS symptoms for 10 years taking numerous meds, enduring lots of medical tests and hospitalizations. Once she started using food combining her symptoms resolved, especially the pain, within a couple of days.

Hope that helps,
Carol

Judy
i followed the food combining diet in the mid to late 1990's for medically diagnosed IBS.

It was great and worked very well for minimising IBS symptoms

BUT (there is always a but) it made eating out and socialising very very difficult (not unlike a strict eating plan for MC management).
At the time acceptance of naturopath recommended eating plans was considered 'out there' and people thought i was strange.
in addition to that, after a few months of following the diet, if i did eat a meal that had protein and carbs together or i had fruit too close to meals i would end up quite nauseated and would vomit, it was like my body could not digest the meal.

I dont think one type of published diet is any better than another i.e. food combining versus Paleo or Blood group versus MRT etc etc
IMO - what is important is indivudual ingredients, all of us have to find the ingredients that work and elminate the ones that cause reactions (MC, inflammation, histamine)
now 12-15years later, looking back with the wisdom found on this site, I realise the importance and value of adopting and sticking with an eating plan that suits my body, we are all different, what works for one may not work for another, and we all have to make decisions about our eating plan based on our lifestyle/living arrangments, work requirements, other medical conditions, budget, family,

hope this helps
