Amazing Vitamin D Test Result
I had blood work done a few weeks ago and got my results last week. My PCP was somewhat shocked to see my vitamin D level of 96.6 ng/mL. He said it was the highest he'd ever seen. He told me that I should probably drop my supplement level. My previous level, taken in June 2010, was 62.5. I've been taking 6,000 IUs a day in the winter, 3,000 IUs in the summer.
I told him that my osteoporosis was obviously not caused by a low level of vitamin D.
I'm reducing my supplement level to 3,000 IUs a day, but I'm not sure that a high level is something to worry about. The acceptable range is 30 - 100, according to the lab report.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
A couple of summers ago, (the first time I tested vitamin D), my level was 96.8. I asked my Dr. if he thought that was too high, and he didn't seem to have a problem with it. I stopped taking it for the rest of that summer, anyway, and then I resumed taking it in the fall, but ever since then, I've never been able to test higher than about 46. I'd like to get it back up to at least in the 60 to 80 range.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I took 5,000 IU all winter, and I'm taking 4,000 IU during the spring. (Well, actually, I get another 500 IU from my multivitamin) I think I'll drop it to about 2,000 IU in late May or early June, (plus the 500), and then I'll do a test in late summer or fall. I wear long-sleeved shirts all the time, due to the risk of skin allergies, if I fail to do that, so that cuts the sun exposure, even though I spend quite a few hours out in the sun in the summer, at various hours of the day. If I recall correctly, I skipped taking a supplement last summer, (except for the 500 IU in the multivitamin), and I did a test during the fall, before I upped the dose.

Tex,
I get 1,640 IUs in my calcium and my multivitamin supplements. My total from all supplements is actually 6,650. I haven't calculated how much I get in my food. I'm probably getting over 7,000 IUs a day. I could probably eliminate 1-2,000 and not miss it.
Ginny,
Well, isn't that great news for you, too! Something is going right for us. I wonder if there's any conclusions that can be drawn from this?

Gloria,
Another reason why the vitamin D that you're taking is boosting your 25(OH)D level more than mine is because I weigh a lot more than you, and dosage is definitely weight dependent. I weight about 60% more than you.

Gloria,
I wouldn't worry about high levels of D. My last blood test, (2 months ago) was 109. I was taking 10,000 of D a day, to help boost my D levels that had ranged from 30, to 60, to 80. I have now dropped down the dosage to 5,000. I will be having another blood test within a week, so it will be interesting to see where my D levels are. I will use those readings to find a baseline amount for my daily vitamin D intake. Ideally, I want to maintain a constant level of high D, around 90.

I thought about that, too, Gabes. I wonder if it is an indication that I'm absorbing nutrients better. My potassium level was increased, too. I've been pretty concerned about it, but it was in the normal range. It could be because I've been eating so many popped corn chips.Gabes wrote:by attaining that great result it would seem your nutrition absorption is better??
Mandy,
Thank you for posting your D levels. I'll be interested in reading about your test level after reducing the vit D supplement.
