So the Zyrtec seems to be helping...now what?

Post by draperygoddess »

I have been taking a half dose of Zyrtec daily for the past two weeks or so, under the suspicion that I might be having a histamine problem, since it seemed like I was reacting to more and more foods as I went along. It seems to have helped, at least in the consistency department, because Norman has visited once every day or two for the time I've been taking the Zyrtec--a definite improvement. However, I have still had stomach cramps on certain days. I was in Chicago for five days and was perfectly fine the whole time, with the exception of the day I ate a salad with some bacon and prosciutto and a little provolone (the cheese was probably enough to cause the cramps), but even that day I had normal BMs. Got home and began with the daily cramps again, so I think there must be something I didn't eat last week that's the culprit. I have cut out tomatoes and am swearing off my beloved V-8 Splash. I didn't cut out coffee because I drank coffee every day in Chicago and had no problems.

So, aside from the fact that I obviously need to start keeping a food diary again, what's next? Should I assume that since the Zyrtec helped, I need to consider a low-histamine diet? Should I keep taking it while I'm trying to figure it out?

Oh--and I noticed yesterday that my fingers are breaking out again. Not a lot, but a few new bumps here and there.

All I can say after my DD's experience is, if the Zyrtec isn't providing obvious relief, get off it now while you still can! Google Zyrtec withdrawal...

Zizzle,

After I wrote the last post I read yours about your DD's experience--eek! Does anyone have better luck with Benadryl? Even half a dose makes me so sleepy! Claritin and Allegra never did anything for my respiratory allergies.

Cynthia,

I posted somewhere recently about a natural anti histamine product called D-Hist - can't find it right now, so don't know if you were part of that conversation. Anyhow, my new PCP (who has a diet/exercise/self advocate orientation) told me about it and said her patients were raving about it. You can find it at OrthoMolecularProducts.com (I'm not sure if health food stores carry it). Since Histame seems to be working for me these days (2 capsules a day), I have not tried it yet, but I will if anything goes wrong. I seem to be having 2 good and then 1 bad day lately, but I think it's because I get cocky :).

Love,
Kari

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Kari, I am taking Histame too and it seems to be making a huge difference. Nice to know of someone else who is taking it!

Zizzle, Now you have me worried. How do I find the post about your DD's experience. I would love to be off of Zyrtec!
