Hi gang,
Long time no write.
Just discovered this product recently.
It's Via Viente's 5 Alive (Whole Food Puree)
1 oz+5 Servings of Fruits & Vegetables (mostly fruit, rather than what one would normally call fruit from what I read)
It's supposed to be high in things like Reservatrol as they include the skin and seeds in the puree where things are more
concentrated. It's not as thick as what I think of as a puree, and doesn't taste half bad. An oz isn't all that much at a time.
Reason I found this is because a dietician told me recently that she thinks it's a good way for senior adults to get the recommended no. of servings of fruits and vegetables per day since it's just about impossible for us seniors to eat that much in the course of a day. Unlike a juice, it does have fiber in there somewhere, and is low on sugar and calories.
Anyway, if you can handle all the ingredients. you could talk to the grocery and other chains and health food stores in your states
to see if they could stock it for you.
I'm going to be using it for a while. Got a few samples recently, and think I'm going to purchase a bottle later on. Information states that it lasts in the frig a long time after it's opened, so that is a plus. It's about a dollar a 1 oz dose, it says.
They also make a pill for women and one for men if you prefer the solid form. Friend with me got a bottle of the women's version and it was even on sale at Central Market in Houston. Think other HEB stores also carry this line in Texas if you are here. Check out their website for possible other locations:
www.VIA5ALIVE.com
Along with this, I've also started back to drinking Lakewood's Organic Super Veggie Juice.
Think it's hard for me to eat more than a salad and an oversized serving of another warm vegetable in one day...just the way
it works out logistically, sometimes. Agree it's difficult for some of us older folks (yes, I'm admitting it) to hold very much food in the tank at a time.
Hope this helps some of you with the same problem. Luce

Hi Luce,
It's good to see an update from you.
That sounds as though it may be a good product, but it's ridiculously overpriced, isn't it? At $1.00 an ounce, apples cost $768.00 per bushel, and peaches cost $800.00 per bushel.
I have a hunch that the main reason why they leave the skin and seeds in the mix is not so much to boost the resveratrol level, as to make the processing dirt cheap. All they have to do is to chunk the whole fruits and veggies into the mill and watch the dollars come out.
The other problem that I have with this entire concept is the fact that it takes very simple whole foods, (that don't require any processing), and shifts them into the category of highly processed foods, (mostly just to make a fast buck). Why process something that doesn't need processing?
Personally, I believe that getting our nutrition from pills is not a very healthy way to live, and not a very economical way to live, either. Instead of eating big salads, and trying to make up for the nutrition deficit by taking a pill, it seems more logical to me to eat more nutrient-rich foods, and skip the pills.
That's just my convoluted opinion, of course.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I like to dump a bunch of veggies into my Vitamix and let it roar (into soup). Peels etc. can be left on and it will disintegrate them. http://vitamix.ahoy.com/recipe/recipe.cgi/0/81/ It will even cook them. A quick, easy and nutritious dose of vegetables.
A Vitamix is expensive but I don't think there's much else out there that works like they do.

I almost always agree with Tex. Whole food is better.... but when you have this disease ( especially at the beginning), you can't tolerate all the good stuff. I use to eat huge green salads with lots of veggies tossed in. I'm still mourning the loss :(. Right now I buy a powdered "green" drink called "Catie's gluten free green drink". It doesn't taste great, but it's chock full of great antioxidants and equal to 7 servings of greens. No mess, no fuss.
I am still holding out hope that I will be able to at least eat a small salad in my future :)

Leah,
Do your own processing, and you can blend and flavor it the way you like, and retain all the nutrients, to boot. As you know, fresh processed veggies and fruits are much more nutritious than processed stuff that has been sitting around on the shelf for weeks or months. If you're going to pay a dollar an ounce for fruit and vegetables and you eat very many of them, you should be able to pay for a Vitamix out of your savings, in fairly short order.

Love, love, love my Vita-Mix! Of course, I am reacting to everything right now, but it chops up the fiber so finely that I usually don't have any problem with it. Cleanup is generally just rinsing it out, or running it for half a minute or so with a couple drops of dish soap and then rinsing it out.

What is the purpose of cooking fruits before eating them? Is it to neutralize the enzymes? I've been enjoying mango, but I am cooking and cooling it before I eat it, whether frozen or fresh. I peel it before I cook it, of course. It's already very soft, so I'm not cooking it to make it softer. Why am I cooking it, then?
As you can tell, fresh fruit is a new experience for me, and I'm being very cautious.

I now we are all different with this disease.
Leah, the Vitamix sounds like a great way to go but I know what you mean about all the cleaninging up and work involved. Of all the fruits out there the most disasterous for me is watermelon. In and out within 15 minutes.

May be a good business plan, but the reason the dietician mentioned it is because we were at a celiac meeting and she was a guest, so something that was said (most folks in attendance are newly diagnosed) reminded her that her elderly patients can't possibly eat enough fruits and vegetables to get all the nutrients they need, so she recommends this as second best. This is in liquid form, by the way, so not quite as processed as if it were in pill form, I should think.
Good point...about the shelf life. I noticed that it's supposed to be good for an entire month, unlike some of those in Wally World that are only good for a week or so after they are opened and refrigerated per the label. There are just so many nutrients in fruits and vegetables that haven't even been discovered yet, that eating the whole fruit is better than any extracted nutrients in pill form which leave other things out that might be doing us good.
One thing I like about the Alive juice is that it's lower in calories than fruit. I've been overdoing fruit lately...love my smoothies. Eating a good amount of vegetables recently and variety, but my absorption tends to hit critical lows on the things I've been tested for. Have to take sublingual and pills I swallow
til my levels are up to normal, so figure I'm probably inadequate in other nutrients that aren't measured. Hard to heal a small bowel when one goes gf at the age I did, even though it's been since end of 2013 since I started the diet faithfully.
Anyway, the samples were fine, so tonight I went to C_ Market and got a jug-a-juice. If nothing else, maybe it will cut down on my caloric intake, and I can just eat vegetables for a while.
By the way, I'm going to try some store brand prickly pair soda tonight. Luce

I have gone back to juicing my fruits and veggies. The cleanup of the juicer isn't like the vitamix (which I would love!) but the juice is great, and I seem to be tolerating it. I am getting enough nutrients that way, and it's not going in and out.
Watermelon is my addiction, but it really goes in and out. And it is on my MRT no no list. As it gets hotter I am going to miss it more and more. I can see myself taking some watermelon into the toilet and sitting there while I eat it to preserve energy!
