A question about upper GI small bowel follow through test??

Post by kitty16 »

Hi

I had this test done yesterday. another delightful day lol, so they told me it could take anywhere from 2 to 10 hours depending on how fast things moved through my system.

I was done in 1 hour. So certainly no blockage but is this a good thing does the speed tell them anything??

Next day off I have the HIDA scan and sometime after that a CAT scan.

I asked my PCP why suddenly after 18 months they are ordering all these test. Her very honest reply, since you have not responded to any of the drugs we are making sure we have not missed something else going on.

Hi Kitty,

That tells them that things move through your digestive system way too fast (which is common with MC).

Your doctor is lost, so he's just covering his butt, to make sure that he didn't overlook some other digestive system disease. He simply doesn't have the foggiest idea how MC works. My GI doc ran me through about a zillion tests too, and after he couldn't find anything, he told me that there was nothing wrong with me.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Kitty, I'm glad you had the test done. Hopefully there is nothing found but its a good test to have to make sure. Like you my transit time was about 47 minutes; I asked the radiologist about the time and he mentioned those with IBDs seem to have the faster transit times.

One of the points to keep in mind is that about 50% of the Crohns cases are found in the small intestine and most likely won't be detected by a colonoscopy (except in the terminal ilium) and as you already had the blood test showing a higher likelihood of Crohns, this test and a CT scan are quite a good idea. Leaving Crohns or other unidentified issues untreated and unmonitored can lead to permanent damage and bigger problems, catching it early and treating with diet first and meds if necessary is a far better option.

Thanks Guys,

I'm letting him order any tests he want, it's actually easy for me to get them done since my youngest daughter does x-ray etc at the hospital. Next week it a HIDA scan and then I think they are doing a CAT in the future.

I'm having a copy of all tests sent to my primary and then I will take her advice as to who I should start seeing. She was never very happy with my choice of Dr. to begin with.

what a journey lol

Hi Kitty,

I saw your post while I was traveling out of town and I'm not very good at typing on my I phone so thought I would wait to post. Since you are really struggling you might consider scheduling a 2nd and possibly a third opinion appointment--i.e. book an appointment with another GI doc your PCP recommends and possibly book a third appointment with say Tex's Mt. Sinai doc maybe 6-8 or 12 weeks out. You can always cancel or push back appointments if you feel like you are making progress with one of the GI docs. It can sometimes take 6- 8 weeks to get in the system with some of these docs. This is just a thought. Last summer I booked a 2nd opinion appointment at the other hospital in town then I kept pushing the appointment back so didn't end up going for about 4 months. My 2nd opinion was someone who was highly recommended but by the time I got there I was under impressed. Just a random thought as I know you are struggling.

I talked with my Human Resources lady today and she has Crohns. I know the jury is still out on whether or not you have Crohns. We were just kind of talking about my situation but she mentioned in her experience the GI docs are good and knowledgeable at dispensing drugs that can help but really did not get the diet/stress connection of inflammatory bowel disease.

Please keep us posted, Brandy PS. On a a funny note when I went through security the TSA guy at airport exrayed my salmon packets in my carryon bag 3 times. He hand searched my carryon and mentioned that I was eating particularly healthy.

Dear Brandy

Thank you for taking the time to help me. I agree, Fortunately I have many friends in the medical field so I'm sending out an SOS to who they think is a good Gastro. to switch/try. By the way none of them wanted me to go to the Doc. I'm presently with. I picked him solely based on convenient location.l

Funny, at least TSA did not try to take it from you.

Hi Kitty,

Believe me we've been there re: the doc choice. Last year I picked gastro doc from "first available." He found the MC so I guess that was good but I've moved onto another one. Brandy
