Irritable Bowel Syndrome Clearly Linked to Gut Bacteria

Post by MBombardier »

The study, in the current issue of Digestive Diseases and Sciences, examined samples of patients' small bowel cultures to confirm the presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth -- or SIBO -- in more than 320 subjects. In patients with IBS, more than a third also were diagnosed with small intestine bacterial overgrowth, compared to fewer than 10 percent of those without the disorder. Of those with diarrhea-predominant IBS, 60 percent also had bacterial overgrowth.
Hmm... Makes me wonder, in my very limited layman's knowledge, which came first?

I've done a ton of research on the bacterial component of this disease, due to my GF's mis/dx of TB back in 1918, and have no doubt that we all have an overgrowth of bad bacteria. The bad bacteria finds it's way to hide in tissue damaged by undigested proteins, such as gluten, and then it just multiplies and we end up with UTI's, bladder infections, boils, you name it. Then we take antibiotics to kill the bacteria and it works for awhile until the overgrowth builds up again and again and again and we keep taking antibiotics and then the antibiotics are blamed for kicking off the MC. At least that's my opinion.

This is being proven in study after study on Crohn's patients. Google Dr. Saleh Naser, University of Central Florida. He and his fellow researchers have developed and patented a blood test for this bacteria (MAP) and then sold it to Red Hill Pharmaceuticals who developed an antibiotic treatment which they began testing on patients in Sept. '11. Other researchers are hot on the heels of this trying to scoop them, as this can potentially be a CURE for Crohn's. 2 recent studies have found MAP in 100% of the patients in the study.

So, in my opinion, the undigested proteins that adhere to our intestinal walls and ferment and eat into the tissue, whether caused by genetics or not, are first.

Interesting article, thanks Marliss

I find this statement a bit intriguing and perhaps worth bringing back to the table of discussion. An overgrowth of Bad Bacteria, this is something we keep circling around to time and time again at this forum.

I'd like to contribute the fact that after finding the Nano Silver (7 years after this post was created) I have to say this may be one of the pieces of the puzzle in helping to remove that overgrowth of bad bacteria. Since I have been taking the maintenance dose of a teaspoon a day, and I feel really good with it, I feel it backs up this area of discussion and it may provide help for someone just starting out.

It seems that the overgrowth of bacteria is a beginning stage of MC/LC/CC and this protocol will not hurt anyone and it would go nicely with any regimen one needed to take and would not cancel out the helpful effects of it like some medications can do when taken together.
