I agree about meditation - the one thing I think is it's important to have something worthwhile to meditate on. "Emptying my mind" doesn't seem helpful for me. Focusing on the God who is in control of all the craziness going on around me - now THAT does help! What
Meditating on emptiness is part of the Buddhist tradition. It has a long history stretching back 2500 years. I have found it very helpful in my life. I think we each have to find our way through this life. There are many different paths to take. If they lead to an increase in kindness and compassion for oneself and for others, than they are a good thing.
I've found meditative yoga to be extremely helpful to healing. I've also used meditation tapes when traveling. If I was retired I would be doing meditative yoga every other day. Tai chi, Wild Goose, traditional prayer etc are some other options.
FOR THE MEN: My yoga classes have a significant number of men and I've been to several classes where the men outnumber the women.
