I'm curious....

Post by desertrat »

I realize everyone here has a different agenda with regards to what they can and cannot eat. However, I am curious as to what your vitamin regimen is on a daily basis. I am wondering if there is a common theme with us in our use of vitamins or are we all helter-skelter?? I am interested if others are taking A, E, or minerals?

Here is what I take on a daily basis (vitamins only)

One Multi B vitamin
One D vitamin (5,000)
Two Vitamin C (1,000 total) with 1 iron
One Lutein (20 mg every other day)
One Biotin (5,000 every other day)
One Reservatrol
One Cortisol Management (to lower cortisol levels)
Two Omega fish oils (1,000 per pill)
Two Krill
Two Bioastin (astaxanthin, which lowers inflammation)
Two Adrenal supports (herbs)
Two Thyroid supports (herbs)
One Multi vitamin every other day
2 Calcium/Magnesium
8 drops of Lugols iodine

So, there you have it. On an average, 18-22 pills a day. Sound like a lot, but I'm used to it. I use Pure Encapsulations, Thorne, and Metagenics for my vitamins, in case you were interested.

Vitamin D, VSL3 probiotic and fish oil.

A word of caution to those you loading up on supplements. They often contain reactive ingredients and can be part of the problem. I always instruct clients to get off of all non-essential supplements when doing an elimination diet and add them back one at a time.

I agree with Mary Beth, re: sometimes there is a reason to minimize supplements.

During initial big flare I eliminated all supplements. I credit GF diet, few foods diet, yoga 3-4 x per week and eliminating all supplements with getting me out of big flare in about 6-8 weeks. This was all kind of random, i.e. b/f diagnosis and b/f I found this forum. I certainly would not recommend eliminate supplements long term.

After diagnosis and finding this forum I added

Solgar D3, 5000 in winter, 3000 in summer
Citrical Calcium citrate 1000 mg (I deduct some if I eat greens or broccoli)

Then sometime later to counter the fatigue I added

Solgar B complex 100

My current regimen is:

Solgar D3, 5000 in winter, 3000 in summer
Citrical Calcium citrate 1000 mg (I deduct some if I eat greens or broccoli)
Solgar B complex 100
CoQ10 120 (for brain issues)
Solgar Magnesium Citrate 200 mg (this varies--my stool dictates the magnesium, sometimes I take 400 mg sometimes none.)
Cosamin DS (Glucosomine/Chondroitin) (this varies from 1-3 per day depending on knee pain)
Flaxseed oil, 2 T per day
L Glutamine powder--3 heaping tsp per day stirred in water
Coconut oil--about 1 T per day (for brain issues)
Culturelle--1 per day (note--I just added probiotics recently--they were problematic in big flare)
Coconut water--not a supplement but I was having foot cramps so I'm adding about 1-1/2" to my L Glut water 3x per day and the potassium has relieved my foot cramps

I've looked at multi's but it just seemed to be too many choices and I'm doing well now so at present no multi. I have a bottle of Solgar C in my cabinet but I'm eating a lot of veggies and some fruits so I've never opened the bottle of C. I slowly added back supplements and only about 6 weeks ago added the magnesium as I was getting constipated from Paleo.

Here's one reason to seriously consider how many supplements you take. It appears Magnesium Stearate apprears as an "other" ingredient in all tablet and capsule supplements. Dr. Mercola has posted a few articles about it's potential side-effects. Anything to worry about?
Story at-a-glance
Many supplement makers add “flow agents” and other fillers to their supplements. One potentially hazardous additive commonly used is magnesium stearate.
Magnesium stearate is essentially a chalk-like substance, which prevents the supplements from sticking together and allows the machinery to run smoother and faster, which equates to cost savings during the manufacturing process. Magnesium stearate is not a source of magnesium and has no benefits, but may have a detrimental effect on your immune function as stearic acid has been linked to suppression of T cells. The filler also stimulates your gut to form a biofilm, which can prevent proper absorption of nutrients in your digestive tract

There are supplement manufacturers who make supplements without magnesium stearate. They tend to be more expensive. The ones I have found are Pure Encapsulations, Thorne and Vital Nutrients. Mercola also markets his own supplements that don't have additives. I have found these brands at The Professional supplement Center.
