Martha,
As far as I am aware, most people can handle them OK, but I found this response to a blog about chia seeds:

http://blog.greensmoothiegirl.com/2010/ ... hia-seeds/I was excited about all the good things that were said about them, so I tried chia seeds. I put them in my smoothie for two weeks straight and the whole time I had diarrhea. As soon as I stopped, I went back to normal. I gave them to my mom who used them for a while. She had multiple bowel movements a day, but not diarrhea and stopped because “it wasn’t worth it.”
I’m sure this doesn’t happen to everyone.
