Any of them can order a gene test. If your doctor orders it, she or he will probably order a test through Prometheus Labs, which will only check for the most common celiac genes (DQ2 and DQ8). You can ask your PCP to order the gene test from Enterolab (or you can order it yourself, direct). The EnteroLab test costs about half as much as the Prometheus test, and it shows results not only for the celiac genes, but also for any other genes connected with gluten sensitivity. The test involves rubbing a sterile cotton swab on the inside of your cheeks, to gather DNA material, and after drying the sample, you seal it in the container provided, and send it to the lab.

Jenny if your doctor orders the test through Prometheus, it will most likely be covered by insurance. If you do the the test yourself it would not be covered. It is possible that your doctor could order it through Enterolab, but it may or may not be covered by going through Enterolab. I'm not sure why, but getting insurance to pay for testing through Enterolab is not as easy as Prometheus labs.
