On Cipro and Flagyl and struggling :'(

Post by Marie »

I'm struggling. I've had D since pregnancy with my first baby in 2007. I was Dx with Hashimotos thyroiditis in 2008 and Celiac in 2010. In 2011 I was pregnant with my son and had recurrent UTIs, my "high-risk" OB put me on antibiotics for nearly 35 weeks. My D got worse. I was tested for C. Diff (came back negative) and colonoscopy in 2012 showed Lymphocytic Colitis. After being put on Asacol with no relief my GI sent me to Shands @ UF. The doctor there put me on Cipro 500 mg 2x day, Flagyl 500 mg 3x day, and 9 mg Entocort. She suspects I might have Crohn's disease and fistula(s) between my bladder & gut. This is awful. I cannot stop running to the bathroom. Has anyone taken these meds? I had high hopes for the Entocort, but I fear the antibiotics are making me worse. I'm scheduled for an MRE on my abdomen this upcoming Tues. and an upper endoscopy a week later. I could use support. I've never suffered so bad...I'd take childbirth over this any day of the week. Suggestions or tips, it seems all food I eat is coming straight out of me.

Before my trip to Shands I was admitted to a local hospital for dehydration from D. X-rays revealed a dialated small intestine and what appeared to be a small bowel obstruction (but no bowel, my intestines had tweaked/twisted amongst themselves from the raging D).

I just want to heal and unfortunately I feel so helpless with no control over my situation. I need some improvement.

I'm so sorry you are suffering so much Marie. I have to say that any time I take Flagyl ( I took it when I first started getting D because they thought I might have a bacteria), my D gets worse. MUCH WORSE . The Entocort should start helping you once you are off the antibiotics. What are they treating anyway?

As for food, I would stick to a homemade broth, some rice, cooked carrots, and maybe some chicken or pork ( if you are okay with these meats) . And keep as hydrated as possible. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Marie, I ditto what Leah said. Flaygl and Cipro together gave me more D and nauseated too.
I made the mistake of trying to eat normally and you really have to eat like a baby, Leah has it right, I roast a chicken, a bit of rice and very well cooked carrots it is just the ticket. Use the caracas of the chicken to make the broth and it is very soothing to your gut. Google for some 24 hour chicken bone broth recipes. I can't tell you how soothing and healing it has been for me.
You don't want anything agitating your colon. That has been the best help for me, and it is a recommended way of introducing foods that your intestines will tolerate. I follow a SCD diet, Paleo diet.
I hope you are feeling well soon, I am fairly new to this site also, and I can tell you the folks here have helped me so much.
Good luck Marie.
Diagnosed with Collagenous Colitis after a 2 month bout of Diarrhea. Confirmed after a biopsy during a colonoscopy.

Thanks Ladies!

Fortunately my physician from Shands, Sarah Glover, called me. She is wonderful! She took the time to call me while she's on vacation with her family instead of leaving it in the hands of the on-call doctor. How awesome to have a physician who cares so much! I was curious why I was on the antibiotics and she explained her concern of a possible rectal-vaginal fistula (hence, the recurrent UTIs). This is why I'm having the MRE and endoscopy, to get a clearer picture of what's happening- Crohn's or fistula. She took me off Flagyl/ Cipro since I already took it 7 days (and I've been feeling worse) and changed me over to Bentyl and Bactrim. Hopefully, this will help until all of my testing is completed.

I'm grateful I received my book I'd ordered from Amazon today, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, which will be of use in getting me started on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I hear it's the best diet for healing the gut. Maria, I hope you've gotten relief on SCD. Thanks again to you both for the support!

Hi Marie,

You'll be in good hands with Dr. Glover. My girlfriend has worked in a key role at Shands for 30 years in fact I had movie and dessert (in my case decaf coffee) with her tonight. She works with all of the GI docs pretty much on a daily basis she but she thinks Glover is the best GI doc at Shands.

She is my second opinion GI doc and I've only had one appointment with her but she struck me as a really smart cookie and I was impressed she asked me at length about my history and my family members history with autoimmune diseases. I was also impressed that Dr. Glover sent me two emails emphasizing the importance of going gluten free for 8 week trial. Dr. Glover gets the food connection/issues more than most doctors.

I'm going to see if I can PM you my cell phone number and please don't hesitate to text or call me if you or your family need any local assistance while you are in Gainesville on followup appointments.

Marie, I was going to tell you that Cipro and Flagyl made me sicker after a couple of days so I got off of them. Then I re-read your second post and see that you are not on Bactrum and Bentyl. I've had both of those (not during LC) but my impression is that they are easier on the system. I hope that helps your Dr. answer the questions and it gets you on the path to recovery.
Take Care,
Carol

Hi Marie, I can certainly understand how the flagyl and cipro are making you feel. I have been given that combination twice in relationship to surgery for Crohns with fistulas and diverticulitis. The second round I had, I could not tolerate the full course of the meds and had to stop. It made me quite nauseous and dizzy and caused a rash that I needed prednisone to calm down.

I hope you start feeling better soon

Take care

PS: A little hint for nausea with any of the meds or just MC is to get some of the candied ginger they sell for sushi. Whenever I'm nauseous, if I chew one of two pieces it stops the nausea instantly. I like the taste of the candied ginger and will often eat some with a little chicken, its a great snack that way. Most supermarkets carry it in their international foods isle.
