Chinese Food bad for us?
I'm on my 6th day of Entocort and even though I'm no where near "normal" yet, I am getting a lot of my life back in that I can actually run errands and attempt to go places that might not have a bathroom within 10 feet. It's the small victories that mean the most. :) I am hopeful that in another week or so I will see even greater improvement.
But, Saturday night I had some Chinese food. That's not something I eat often because I don't really care for it but the opportunity arose and that's what we got. I figured beef and rice were probably "safe" and didn't worry about the inflammatory factor but Sunday I feel like I took a step backwards in my healing process..... bloating, gas and D were back in full force. Of course I thought back over everything I put into my mouth over the last 24 hours trying to figure out why and the only thing out of the ordinary was the Chinese food. Does MSG wreak havoc with colitis?

Diagnosed November 2004, Used Asacol and Lialda, sometimes worked, sometimes made it worse. Entocort always works but hate it. Remission only lasts 3-6 months and then back on Entocort. Enterolab test July 2017, now gluten free. Time will tell!

Sue,
Most Chinese food contains soy sauce and soy sauce not only contains soy, which many of us are sensitive to, but usually wheat as well.
"Fermented soybeans, wheat, water, and salt are the main ingredients in soy sauce. The best sauces are then "brewed," through an aging and fermenting process that lasts months before reaching store shelves. Some commercial products are produced in a matter of days through the use of chemicals. These are less expensive, but the taste may also reflect added ingredients.

Re: Chinese Food bad for us?
Sue-I agree with Jean in that it was likely the soy sauce. I have not had chinese food since my diagnosis but was eating a gluten free sauce on my turkey that was making me feel horrible and lo and behold it too had soy sauce in it! I'm so glad that the Ebntocort is starting to work for you!Sue777 wrote:I'm on my 6th day of Entocort and even though I'm no where near "normal" yet, I am getting a lot of my life back in that I can actually run errands and attempt to go places that might not have a bathroom within 10 feet. Hmmmmmmm, now you've got me curious and I think I may have to do a small test. Perhaps tonight I will have a few pods of edamame (used to be one of my favorite snacks) and see what happens.

Sue,
Some of us are sensitive to rice. I'm OK with beef, but others aren't.
Apart from the soy, there might be some ingredients in the food that are not good for you. You can only know what's in the food if they either list the ingredients, or you can talk to the chef.
If you have been eating only a few foods that are proving "safe" for you, and were exposed to other stuff in the restaurant any one of them might have caused your setback.

No, I'm not gluten-free, and hope to never have to be. I admire those of you who can do it but I think it would depress me to no end and hope I don't have to find out.Zizzle wrote:Sue,
Are you saying you are not otherwise eating gluten free? If you are gluten free, then my money is on the wheat (and therefore gluten) in the soy sauce. I used to think MSG made me sick, until I went gluten free, and now I barely notice the effects of MSG (although I do try to avoid it).

Sue,
since most of us are gluten free, and try to do without drugs unless we have no choice, I think you'll find that most of us would suggest going gluten free before anything else.
Gluten free is not difficult. Dairy and egg free is much worse. If you can have corn and rice you have a lot of choices.
