entocort update and a couple questions
Hi everyone, I have now been taking the entocort for 6 days and it has been 6 wonderful days for me FROM THE START!!! The very 1st day........absolutely no tummy rumbles and grumblings and haven't since. I actually leave the house now to run my own errands and see the grandkids!!!!!! YYYYEEEEAAAA!!!!! Usually go potty now 1st thing I get up and then after supper before bed. Actually almost like clockwork and almost 100% normal. I know the GF diet helped tremendously and have continued on it since and will stay on it. Fact is.....I don't miss the gluten items that much anyway. Tonite I fixed my 1st GF pasta with my 'homemade spagetti sauce'.....its really simple!!!! I took tips off this website for cooking the pasta and draining it and it was wonderful and I couldn't even tell the difference. I was extremely pleased.
However I do have a couple questions about the use of entocort. THe 1st thing is.....does it really affect your bloodsugars as much as my GI doc is raising cane about? And does it increase your appetite typically? I have had the appetite like no other and let me tell you......the last 4 months I could hardly eat anything. Either didn't want to or felt icky after I ate so I would avoid it. Besides.....anytime I ate I was running to the bathroom. That is just not happening now and I can't believe the 200% turn-a-round in my life since I started it. I hope it continues and am curious if others have had bloodsugar issues and a healthy appetite while on entocort. Thanks again to all for the wonderful advice I have been reading and getting from you all.

Hi Cathy,
Congratulations, that was an extremely fast response.
Unfortunately, corticosteroids can be a problem for diabetics, because corticosteroids can raise blood glucose levels by antagonizing the action of, and suppressing the secretion of insulin, which interferes with glucose uptake. Because of that, most people who take corticosteroids show some degree of insulin resistance, which often resolves after the corticosteroid is discontinued.
And yes, many people gain weight while taking budesonide, because of the appetite boost.
Corticosteroids can bring amazing results for many of us, but they can also have some nasty side effects, unfortunately.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

entocort update and a couple of questions
Hey Cathy,
I will add little to what Tex said except that I am type 1 and I guarantee you that your blood sugar will rise. I take it that you're a type 2 otherwise you would have known that your sugar is up already...
Just adjust your meds and monitor your blood sugars frequently so that it is well calibrated with your food intake. You need to test frequently to see what's going on.
I take entocort too and I have raised my insulin doses to accommodate that. It's working out fine.
Wishing you the best,
Monique
I don't find that I am hungrier. Rarely, just sometimes after a good swim or vigorous exercise.

Hi Monique,
Yes Type 2 is correct and have started monitoring blood sugar levels the last 2 days now and they are showing real good. Actually they took me off my diabetes meds a week ago and the last 2 days the highest has been 135 2 hrs after a pasta dinner. Morning fasting and other checks after brkfast have ranged from 120 to 134. This is without taking my meds for a week. I'm wondering since I lost 60 lbs in the last 4 months (once MC came into my life) if I was over medicating the diabetes anyway. I would have times where I would break out in a sweat and feel lite headed. I didn't test them then because I have been so regulated for years that I haven't had to test them for years. Now I'm thinking that I really was probably taking to high a dose and my blood sugars were dropping on me. I will watch them real close for the next 3 weeks and then I am due for my 6 month blood test anyway. After that I follow up with the doc to determine what to do next. So I'm hoping that the weight loss may reduce my meds either a bit or completely!!!! That would be REALLY nice.
thanks Monique

entocort update and a couple of questions
Hi Cathy,
Sounds like your weight loss is contributing to your lower blood sugars. Sometimes that's all it takes. That's very good news! You may not need meds after all. Your numbers are really good especially after meals. If you're light headed, it only means your sugar is too low. It's a good thing that your doctor took you off your meds.
It would be wonderful if you manage to stay off your meds even with entocort. That would be wonderful!
Take good care of yourself. It's really difficult to manage 2 chronic conditions. I feel like I have a dozen balls in the air all the time.
Regards,
Monique

Good news all around Cathy! Just be aware that this is your "healing time" ( I first cut dairy then gluten) and that you have to pay very close attention to anything that you may be reacting to AND when you start to get a little C, it's time to cut back on the Entocort dose. Most doctors will not let you stay on a three pill a day dose for more than a few months.
When I started tapering my dose down is when I discovered other intolerances. Soy, then peanut butter, certain vegetable oils...etc.
I know how wonderful it feels when the drugs work. They worked really fast for me also. Just keep in mind that your goal is to heal enough to get off the meds.
Good luck
Leah
