To juice or not to juice, that is the question...
Hi y'all (as they say in Georgia) !
I saw the thread about juicing from I think Z. who bought a juicer and I was intrigued if juicing might be the answer for all my nutritional deficiencies while helping my gut heal. I never owned a juicer, but I am assuming that fiber is left behind, which is what I would want since fiber right now is my enemy.
I am a bit concerned about how that would play with my type 1 diabetes, but I would have to measure the spikes in my blood sugar and act accordingly.
I am in a horrible flare, not eating much (like 5 things), not having any vegetables at all and the only fruit I eat is jars of baby fruit.
I am thin and scared of losing anymore weight!
Thank you for chiming in!

Hmmm, I don't know the answer to your question, but here are my thoughts:
Juicing certainly sends the sugars and nutrients from the fruits and veggies into your bloodstream faster, because they bypass much of the digestive process. I think that would mean needing to juice less fruits and more veggies and greens, and perhaps cutting them with water and drinking them slowly. The downside to the centrifugal juicer I bought is that it excels with soft fruit and hard veggies, but it does not juice greens particularly well. Much of the greens get lost in the pulp. That said, if you were going to get a juicer, you might invest in a masticating-type of juicer that gets more juice out of green leaves.

Monique,
I sort of answered this question on another thread you posted....anyway, vegetable juicing is the way to go, if you do it, not fruits...except maybe an apple. This is what I read, who knows....
It is well worth a try...I felt so much better, so much more energy. Plus, it does give your colon a holiday. I have taken advice from this site and not juice fasted all meals, but one or two times a day.
I am a carrot, kale, romaine lettuce, celery, sometimes ginger, and lemon kind of a gal. I try to drink juice, take a drink of water, and alternate until the juice is gone.

Hi Z. Mickey,
I appreciate both of your feedback.
Z. I know you did your homework before buying your juicer. Didn't know there were the centrifugal and the masticating type. When you read the description online, these two things are not differentiated. I would very much like to include greens although I have some concern about all this raw foods going into my system (just wondering if it'll unleash D).
I friend brought me her juicer today to try before I buy one and I did try it with apples and carrots and it was wonderful although it didn't stop the post-meal heaviness from happening but at least I got more food into me than I would've otherwise.
Mickey, thank you for your suggestions---I made a quick run to the super today and just didn't know what to buy. I ended up with carrots, celery and apples. Well, it's a good start. I like the idea of lemon and ginger, kale...
Warmest regards,
Monique

Monique,
Good luck with the juicing....if you get some green leafy vegetables, you can roll them so they are denser therefore taking a little more time to go through the juicer. I know the fellow that did the documentary called Fat Sick and Nearly Dead used a centrifugal juicer and he did well with it.. It was a Breville of some sort. Zizzle may know, and he had amazing results.
The reason I mention this is the masticating juicers start at around 250.00 dollars and you can get a centrifugal juicer on Amazon for under a 100.00 dollars. Costco has a Hamilton Beach for 49.00 dollars and it is rated number two.....
I know you said something about raw veggies being hard on your system, remember your colon does not have to process the fiber which is where I think we have our trouble IMHO. Also,I read where if you chew the juice in your mouth it releases the digestive enzymes that also help.

Thanks Mickey for the tips. Good idea about rolling the leaves, i was wondering how I was going to handle that....
Yeah, I saw where you posted about the hamilton beach juicer as number 2 and I ordered it today from walmart (not knowing that costco was cheaper---I don't have a card but a friend of mine does). the walmart price was $59 :-( oh, well)
thanks again,
warm regards,
Monique

I have a masticating juicer. It also has an attachment to make nut butters and for turning frozen bananas and berries into ice cream. I don't use the latter much because I have an ice cream machine. But the juicer is terrific. It gets maximum juice out of everything, especially if you push fruits through with harder veggies.
Veggies over fruits - that is mainly because of the higher calorie content of fruit, and most people who follow Joe what's his name from Fat Sick and Nearly Dead are doing it to lose weight, so they advocate using a preponderance of low calorie veggies. Even carrots, which have high glycemic index, are supposed to be used sparingly.

Thanks Mickey and Lesley,
I appreciate your advice...
Lesley, the least of my concerns is losing weight. I am too thin, I am trying to get more calories, not less! If I get any thinner, I'll have to start shopping at the kids dept...
Regards,
Monique
Lesley---how are you doing? are you still in full flare up or has it settled a bit?

I have the Breville Juice Fountain, same as the one in Joe Cross' movie (which came free with my purchase. I hadn't seen the movie). I do bunch up the greens and run them through slowly but still lose some. You might consider cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, and other high water veggies. Try adding olive oil for a yummy gazpacho-like juice.
Good luck!
Good luck!

So, Monique, you can drink juices with any amount of fruits because they are high in calories. You can also use sweet potatoes, if you tolerate them, and a high sugar veggie like beetroot.
Enjoy your juicing.
Mickie - seems that you have the right formula for your body with your method of diluting the juice.
