B3 and staph infections

Post by Deb »

As I've been so worried with my son's injuries and potential infections I was interested to read this article. I mentioned it to my son's doctor who pretty much rolled his eyes at me. I did make contact, however, with the main researcher who has passed my information on to the head doctor who oversaw the study. I'm hoping for some information regarding the dosage.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A new study suggests that nicotinamide, more commonly known as vitamin B3, may be able to combat some of the antibiotic-resistance staph infections that are increasingly common around the world, have killed thousands and can pose a significant threat to public health.

The research found that high doses of this vitamin increased by 1,000 times the ability of immune cells to kill staph bacteria. The work was done both in laboratory animals and with human blood.

The findings were published today in the Journal of Clinical Investigation by researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, UCLA, and other institutions. The research was supported by several grants from the National Institutes of Health.

The work may offer a new avenue of attack against the growing number of “superbugs.”

Dear Deb,

I was so sorry to learn of your son's accident. How is he doing now?

Good for you for trying to uncover every possible stone to help your son. I am a firm believer that moms usually know best and that you need to listen to your intuition. If you are unable to find out the dose used in the study, at least you can urge him to eat foods high in niacin (vitamin B3) - like salmon, tuna, beets, sunflower seeds, some mushrooms, peanuts, etc. Also, he can take OTC B3 supplements. I know some people get a reaction to too much niacin, but it shouldn't happen if he is getting it from foods and appropriate doses of supplements.

Please keep us updated on his progress.

Also, don't forget about vitamin D. It is also good at preventing infections. Make sure he is taking at least 5000 IUs per day for now, assuming he is not deficient.

Love,

Polly

Thanks so much, Polly. He had a second surgery today (with another scheduled next week). He seemed pretty good today but his wife just informed me he was feeling warm tonight, so I'm obviously panicking. The main doctor from the study got back to me and said that he had no info for dosing yet as they hadn't done clinical trials. Wiki says "stay under 3G to prevent liver damage". He was finally able to eat soft foods tonight so I'll bring the B3 and vitamin D up tomorrow. Thank you all for your concern. Deb
