no e-mail alert?.... Tex?

Post by Leah »

Hi Tex. For some reason, I am not getting e-ail alerts from the forum. Is there something I can do on my end to make sure I do?

Hi Leah,

You might check your profile to see if that option has somehow been deselected.

I went into my profile and as far as I can see, my e-mail notification is checked. ???? I had to go to the main message board to see if you replied to this post. I just don't get it

Hmmmmmm. Beats me. Weird stuff happens with computers, sometimes. Try selecting the option to "Notify me when a reply is posted" below the message-composing window, whenever you respond to a post.

The option in your profile should supersede that, but even if the profile option doesn't work, maybe the one below the posting window will do the job.

Have you checked your email provider's spam filter to make sure that it isn't preventing those emails from being relayed to your mailbox? Sometimes when new filters are added, they're automatically set up to quarantine any emails that contain live links, and the emails from this board usually contain live links, of course.

Tex,

Hi, this is Leah's brother-in-law and her computer person (been doing this since the 70's!)

Leah had done all that you have recommended (exactly what I said to check too...) but she's still not getting the email notifications - like for the posting above. The "Notify me when a reply is posted" is indeed checked. If you have any control over your email server, you might want to check your SMTP settings for this forum and/or check to be sure that the server is accepting mail from the forum. I've seen problems in the past when SSL certs expire or when ISPs arbitrarily decide to change email policies to alter ports or require SSL or whatever.

Keep up the great work you are doing on this forum. You obviously change people's lives (including Leah's!) by keeping communications open and flowing.

Hi Ron,

I read your post this morning, and then I picked one of the other threads and checked the "Notify me when a reply is posted" box. The system immediately sent me an email (within one minute) after someone posted on that thread. So it appears to me as though the system is working properly (at least that part of it).

If everything else seems to to check out OK on her computer, (including any spam filters that might be involved with her email account), try clearing the cookie cache, and then closing all open tabs on the browser. That will force the server to set a new cookie on Leah's computer the next time she tries to log on to the site.

Sometimes corrupt cookies will cause strange things to happen, though I've never seen a case where email notifications were affected. Usually, corrupt cookies just cause log on or navigation problems. Nothing surprises me any more about computers, though, so it's worth a try.

I'm pretty sure that you (or she) have/has already done this, but have you checked to make sure that the email address listed in her profile is still a valid address? I'm going to send two emails to her address, one containing a live link, and one without, (in case a spam filter is involved. We'll see if one or both show up in her mailbox.

Many thanks for the kind words,
Tex

There's one other possibility that just occurred to me. Once the system notifies you of a post that's been selected for notification, no additional notifications will be sent until you visit that topic. Visiting a topic while not logged in, for example, would not count as a valid visit. Is there a chance that you might have failed to respond to a notification?

Regardless, I'm pretty sure that resetting the cookie cache should resolve that problem, also.

Hi Leah,

Sure. Sorry that it took me so long to log in, I got side-tracked on another project.

No problem.... but also no e-mail. I am getting VERY FRUSTRATED! It's impossible to follow a thread without notices.

Well that's the dangdest mystery I've run into in a while. :headscratch:

Do you remember if anything at all had been changed on your computer (or in your profile here on the board), just before this problem started? Something had to happen to change the status quo.

Personally, I very rarely use those notifications. I just log on and read all the threads that are flagged as new, starting with the oldest, so that I don't miss any. But I can see how, if only selective threads are followed, notifications can come in very handy.

Have you tried logging in on another computer to see if that makes a difference? That could provide a clue as to where the problem might lie.

No, but all the computers in the house run from the same internet connection. I tried to sign up as another person, but I don't think that is working because my e-mail address is the same. No, I haven't changed anything on the computer since it stopped working. I keep checking the "junk" to see if it's being filtered, but there is nothing coming in at all. I just don't know what to do next.

No, I didn't mean to sign up with a different account. I meant to just use a different computer to log in to the same account. That would tell you whether it's the computer, or something farther up the line.

Is it possible for you to completely erase me from the forum and let me try all over again?

Well yes,

But if we're going to preserve all your posts so that I can reassign them to the new account, we'll need to be careful how we go about it.

What username do you want to use? If it's the same, I'll need to change the original username first. I can re-register you with a new account, and assign a new password that you can change after you log on. Do you want to use the same email address? If so, I may need to assign a fictitious email address to your original account.

If I do that, the system will send you an email confirming your registration. If you receive it, it should tell you your username and your new password, If you don't receive it, then that will be an indication that a new account isn't going to solve the problem, and there would be no point in moving to a new account. Be sure you have my email address in case you can't log on to the board.

Let me know if you want me to go ahead, and the other info that I asked for. I don't intend to delete your original account unless the new one works.
