Treating a yeast infection?

Post by Barb1 »

I am going to have to go to my Dr. for a yeast infection and since we have to be careful what antibiotic we take, I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and what they used to treat it? I'm sure my doctor won't know. I have been doing good and I don't want to trigger D again. In the past I have taken fluconazole and it worked, and plain yogurt is suppose to be good too, but I am staying away from dairy. I have been taking a probiotic also.

Is it possible sugar can cause a yeast infection? I don't really eat much table sugar, I use a low glycemic type like coconut sugar, but I will have Rice Chex's cinnamon and sugar for a sweet treat. Sugar never bothered me before.

I talked to Tex about antibiotics, these were some we could use, ciproflaxacin or other fluoroquindones, and maybe azithromycin, but I don't know if those are the right type.

I'd appreciate any help,
Barb

Hi Barb,

I just happened to purchase two items yesterday to treat my yeast infection; Miconazole 7 (Miconazole Nitrate Vaginal Cream 2%) and Hydrocortisone Cream, USP 1% for itch and rash relief. I began the treatment last night but it may take the better part of the week to cure the infection, however, the instructions indicate that symptoms should improve in 3 days. Usually it is an antibiotic that brings on a yeast infection as the antibiotic screws up the PH/acid balance in our systems which then causes our normal fungus level to multiply out of control.

Have you tried any of the "over the counter" treatments like the one I purchased? If it is just a yeast infection and not a bacterial infection you shouldn't have to go to the doctor. What kind of symptoms are you having? Are you having a discharge? Is the fluid thin and clear or is it thick and white? If the discharge has a tinge of yellow or green, along with an unpleasant odor it may be a bacterial infection.

Take care!

If it's a yeast infection, you probably don't need antibiotics, just the OTC fungal treatments, I would think. Yeast do feed on carbs and sugar. I've read to avoid those if you have a yeast problem. I'm going for a checkup next month as I think I may have one.

Glad to hear you've been doing well with this disease.

My symptoms are mild (always were), no odor, normal discharge maybe a litte more than normal. It burns slightly, could a bladder infection do that too? I will try the OTC medication, although I hate using it, that why I wondered about a prescription medication.

I am getting retested through Metamatrix who merged with Entero Lab and my Dr. thinks I will get even more information, we'll see. It has only been since December that I found out and my hubby has been bugging me to get retested so I did. I'll be curious to see if my levels have increased, because I do not purposely buy or eat gluten , but I may get it unknowling through dressings, condiments, or the like that don't disclose if they are gluten free.

Thanks,
Barb

Does this merger mean that maybe insurance companies will cover it? I've been putting it off not wanting to pay the $600 just yet. Maybe I should ask my doctor at the end of the month but he's a jerk and will probably wonder why in the heck I would need testing for other food intolerances.

Hi Barb.
Getting tested is a good idea since you don' know if it's yeast or bacterial. I went through years and years with doctors and doctors to figure out why I had chronic vaginal infections. I tried many treatments and diets to see if we could get a hold of what and why this was happening. Diet made no difference. It turns out whenever the doc checked the discharge under the microscope, it showed tons of white blood cells. I had copious amounts of discharge and burning.
Anyway, I was sent to Kaiser's "specialist". She finally gave me a few answers, but no cure. I have DIV (desquamative inflammatory vaginitis) which is autoimmune. It's a bacterial overgrowth that goes away with two weeks of antibiotic cream, but comes right back. I am now on a weekly regimen of Clindamycin cream, a steroid suppository ( inserted ), and taking an oral antihistamine. All of this seems to keep the symptoms at bay "somewhat". I was hoping my new diet would help, but it doesn't seem to matter.
I hope this is not what you have and that you get it taken care of soon.

Leah,
I feel for you, we all probably have enough autoimmune problems and most of them we can keep under control; but a yeast infection is hard to get rid of. I searched the internet for home remedies such as using a garlic clove as a suppository, plain yorgurt put into an emptied tampon holder along with eating it and probiotics. All seemed to help but I got it back, maybe my husband and I are passing it back and forth.

About the testing with Metamatrix my price was $395, they will bill my insurance and if they don't pay that is all I owe.

Terri,
My Dr. is not the typical "Dr.", he's anti- aging Dr. and believes in treating the cause not the symptom. Many Dr.s don't know about some of the testing that he does, like Entero Lab. He is open to anything, even on something I found out on my own. And he accepts my insurance! If you really don't like your Dr. I would find one that you do.

Thanks,
Barb

When I was going through all of my "trials and errors", I at one time was taking a fluconazole once a week.... for months! It seems to be a pretty safe anti-fungal drug, but if it is yeast that you have, it would be nice to know WHY you are having an ongoing overgrowth. It's also possible that you have both (yeast and bacteria). What would happen to me is that the flora would get so messed up by one of them, that the other would kick in.

Hope you find a cure soon
