Nuts!

Post by tex »

Hi All,

For some unknown reason, I don't seem to be able to tolerate any nuts. At least I know that peanuts, almonds, and cashews don't agree with me.

The pecan trees in the yard seem to have made a fair crop of nuts this year, and they are beginning to fall now. Years ago, pecans always seemed to give me a belly ache, but I could tolerate all the other nuts just fine. Consequently, I haven't even tried to eat a single pecan for over 30 years. So it occurred to me that maybe I might be able to tolerate pecans, and if so, then I've got enough to snack on for at least a year.

So I tried a small one late yesterday afternoon. I didn't notice any obvious reaction, but later, when I took a shower and went to bed, I noticed that I felt a little off. By then I had forgotten about eating the pecan, so I just shrugged off my feeling of something being not quite right.

The D woke me at 1:30. And again, a little before daylight. By midday, I was still feeling off, and having D, and I began to wonder what on earth I might have eaten, to cause the problem. Then as I walked under a pecan tree, and heard one go "crunch" underfoot, it dawned on me. :duh:

I reckon I'll stop trying to find a nut that I can tolerate. Apparently, I can't tolerate any of them — not even nut butters. :sigh:

How frustrating! I'm a nut lover, and someone mentioned yesterday that my love of almonds might be causing me problems, so I set them aside and moved to sunflower seeds. ;) Not sure how I handle those as I'm still in the learning stage. I hope I can eat them. Would love to find quick, easy snacky foods.
But I'm glad you figured that out relatively soon. Hope you feel better soon!

Oh, giving up nuts is hard. Does this mean you can't use almond flour either? That really cuts out any paleo baking. The morning glory muffins which so many of us enjoy use almond flour.

Your list of intolerances is growing. When did you find out that grapes bother you?

I first noticed it about 10 years ago, when I was recovering. I tried them again, 2 or 3 years ago, and they promptly purged my system, so that's when I gave them up for good. I'm not sure if it's the sorbitol, or the sulfites in grapes, or a combination of them, but grapes are a pretty potent laxative for me.

Almond butter bothers me the least of any of the nut butters that I've tried, and I can sorta tolerate small amounts of it, but the problem is that I usually can't stop at a small amount, so I'm better off if I just scratch it off my list. I've never ventured into baking, so not having almond flour for baking isn't much of a handicap (at least not at this point).

Hi, I have found a good snack bar that is g-f. They have many different types but they contain many different types of nuts. Some have a low natural sugar content and the only ones that have refined sugar are he ones that have dark chocolate. So far, I have not had any reaction and only consume one a day. You can find them online " Kind bars.com " or you can find them in some stores. You can look up the ingredients for each bar. Jon

Hi All,
My local HyVee grocery store had a Gluten Free day today with many suppliers and vendors serving Gluten Free items(including GF Michelob Ultra Lime and Pommegranite flavor) They had nutrionists on hand and Drs giving talks. I thought this was a great way to support the GF world and let me tell you......they were packed!!!!
Found a new bread that they actually served fresh with hummas and shaved ham or turkey. THe bread is Canyon Bakehouse 7 grain. It was a delicious soft bread to eat without toasting it. I bought a loaf..........however another vendor was the Kind bars interesting enough. Yes they do enjoy their nuts so the olny one I tried was the cashew one. I'm not much on nuts so if I have an intolerant to it its not going to be a big deal. Lots of free samples and lots of tasting of the different items. Has anyone heard of "smart chicken"? They were cooking that with taco sauce and serving with GF nacho type chips. I bought some it was really good but I didn't know if the "smart chicken" was a gimmick or if its a much better form of chicken. I usually by free range chicken breats from my local butcher shop but this "smart chicken" was ground up like burger or turkey. Interesting :headscratch:

Hi Cathy,

I've never heard of "smart chicken". I was going to guess that maybe smart chickens know better than to cross the road when a car is coming. But if they're only sold as ground meat, that might mean that they aren't smart enough to dodge a semi.

Evidently it's a trademarked brand. From their website:
Smart Chicken is dedicated to producing the
safest, highest quality, and best tasting
fresh chicken in the United States
while exemplifying excellence in all aspects
of customer service.

All Smart Chicken products are raised
without animal byproducts, antibiotics,
or hormones, are 100% all-natural,
and are processed using purified cold air
instead of adding
non-potable water—
that’s The Air-Chilled Difference.

Oh no Tex! That's a shame. I love nuts as well and I do hope I can eat one again one day. And to think you got all that D from one little pecan!

Hope you are feeling much better. Can you imagine what would have happened if you had had a little handful! Did you have pain with it as well?

That's the strange part. The other nuts always cause a bellyache and slight bloating. I felt a little "off", but it was barely noticeable. No aches or pains, no headache or cramps. Just D. Oats and grapes cause the same effect. But maybe if I had eaten more than one pecan I might have had other symptoms. I reckon I'll never know, because I'll never eat any again.

That's the point I'm at, too. I've tried so many nut butters: macadamia, almond, hazelnut, plus a seed butter, sunflower, and none of them settle well with me. I do seem to tolerate almond flour. But... I'm still taking meds to control my MC, so perhaps I couldn't eat almond flour w/o the meds. Since I would starve without the almond flour, I'll probably never know.

Yep Tex you are probably right........that chicken apparently did meet the semi but I was afraid that it was smarter than me because I did buy it!!!!! It was good and I'll tell myself that it was healthier for me. Thanks for the research on the smart chicken!!!!

Sorry about the nuts Tex. For me it would be mainly giving up my muffins, and that would be awful
I seem to be able to tolerate pecans, walnuts and hazelnuts as flours for baking.

I want HyVee! I've been to one in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri but there is nothing similar in the west.

I noticed quite an extensive separate gluten free section at that time.....sigh.

Sorry to hear about the pecans, Tex, especially since they're free for the picking. Have you tried the sunflower seeds that JenniferS mentioned? You've got to have some little healthy snack!

The only nut I can't tolerate at all is walnut -- my tongue swells up. Lately I can't eat pomegranate or drink pomegranate juice -- get a rash on my face. Don't know how things change in our bodies so that our intolerances grow in number. By the way, chocolate covered pomegranate bites are delicious. :-(

No, I haven't tried sunflower seeds. I may have to try them.

Thanks,
