hot chocolate

Post by brandy »

I love hot chocolate but have struggled trying to find an acceptable replacement. Last year I bought Ghiradelli natural unsweetened cocoa as the only ingredient is natural cocoa.
I tried unflavored rice milk, the ghiradelli cocoa and a smidge of either sugar or stevia I can't remember but it was a dismal failure. It was way to runny and watery compared to the richness of cows milk. This year I tried same cocoa with unflavored hemp milk. The taste was okayish but I couldn't deal with the smell. I guess I can try with the unflavored almond milk and see how that works.

Is anyone have a hot chocolate recipe that they like?

Thanks, Brandy

Hummmmmm!

Wondering -- have you ever tried goats milk? Don't know why, but sometimes when a baby for some reason is unable to be nursed, and then also seems intolerant of infant formulas, goats milk is used and well tolerated. It comes in quart sized containers in many dairy depatments. Couldn't be to expensive to just try one quart for your hot chocolate?

If you try, let us know.

I made it with Hershey's cocoa and used almond milk. I thought it was very good.

Hi Brandy,

It appears that Dee has come to our rescue again. She has added a great-looking hot chocolate recipe in Dee's Kitchen, using coconut milk, and honey or agave nectar for the sweetener.

She's also added other recipes for the Thanksgiving season, including a whipped cream substitute, using coconut milk.

I've used Almond and coconut milk, and I found an allergen-friendly hot cocoa mix at Whole Foods. However, my favorite is Guatemalan/Mexican-style "Chocolate" which is made only with water. The bar contains cocoa, cinnamon and sugar. Yummy!

I use unsweetened cocoa, dates, and coconut milk to make chocolate milk for the kids. I think I usually add a little vanilla and a dash of salt (I buy the Singing Dog alcohol free vanilla). Blend it in the Vitamix.
