GMOs at the Polls (article on GMOs)
Dear friends,
My mom found this article on commondreams.com website today. Specifically at http://www.commondreams.org/view/2012/11/04-0. It's an eyeopening short article by Frances Moore Lappe, the author of Diet for a Small Planet. My mom probably has MC/CC, but has never had a positive test during colonoscopy. I suspect her GE didn't know what he was doing.
Given that her challenges mirror mine, I'm 99% sure she has MC.
I think this article is worth a couple minutes of your time to learn more about Monsato and the control it has over farmers. Tex, I'd be interested in your take on this, especially since you are a farmer.
Warm regards,
Sharaine

Hi Sharaine,
I was not able to open the link you posted. However, it's ironic that you should bring up this topic, since I'm in the midst of reading a book by Barbara Kingsolver titled "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" where she talks all about what Monsanto has been doing to the food industry - quite a scary eye opener to be sure.
Love,
Kari

It's very scary and I think Prop.37 ( here in Ca.) will go down in defeat tomorrow because Monsanto and Dow have outspent the proponents of GMO labeling 10 to 1. My scientist brother-in-law voted against it because there is "no scientific evidence that proves GMO foods cause any problems to our health" . Makes me crazy!

Hi Sharaine,
I'm not a fan of Monsanto. But unfortunately, as far as production agriculture is concerned, they are the only game in town when it comes to the ability to compete/survive in agriculture, these days. The biggest complaint I have is not that Monsanto is creating GMO crops, but that the government chose to grant them exclusive patent rights over a genetic process that is nothing more than a laboratory improvement of a natural process that has occurred randomly in nature since the beginning of time, and those patents pretty much guarantee them a monopoly in the seed industry.
IMO, GMO technology essentially does the same thing as the selective breeding techniques that agronomists and farmers have used for thousands of years, but of course it greatly speeds up the process and it eliminates the random aspect of selective breeding that previously existed. No one should be allowed to patent genetics, since they are a preexisting part of nature. If Monsanto had never been granted those patient rights, they would never have pursued any commercial scale GMO projects. So in essence, the government patent office (and the justice system which upholds those patents), are really to blame for the GMO debacle. (But that's just my opinion).

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Sharaine, Thank you for the site about the GMO. I watched a movie about GMO's and now, look for foods that are GMO free. No longer using canola oil and now only use extra virgin olive oil. The only way to stop the use of GMO is to educate the comsumers and show them how it effects the livestock. One way would be ask your local cable station to play the movie about the GMO's. It would be great to see the cable education channels to play the movie, but if they are sponsored by the companies that produce the GMO's, that will not happen. Jon

Dr OZ had a segment on GMO foods. There are three short video clips you can watch here.

(there is a short ad at the beginning of each video)
He recommends we buy generic and avoid foods that come from these crops as they are genetically modified.
Canola
Corn
Papaya
Soy
Sugar Beets

I am bummed about Prop 37 failing. Here's an article about the money spent defeating it, lots of contributed by "natural" brands like Cascadian Farm, Larabar, Kashi, Muir Glen and others.

I suppose Prop 37 could have hurt their business if they have to label something that has a small % of GMO content. I hope the heightened awareness makes labeling and GMO avoidance more attractive to food companies.

Hi Zizzle, Thank you for update about Prop37. If more states added a prop about labelling GMO,s on their next state election, it may make the companies eliminate GMO,s instead of spending the money to defeat it. This may create new jobs in the food industry. Starting a busines to produce food products that do use GMO,s. Jon
