Surgeon Visit and Surgery Date
Thank you Mars and Polly for the good wishes this morning...I needed that. Mike went with me to the Dr. Appt. We both Like Dr. Hughes alot. Very good bedside manner and Nice man. Anyway....we all disscussed doing one knee or both...there was alot of disscussion (he spent nearly an hour talking to us) and we decided to do one knee now and the next one when I am ready (about 6-8 mo) He said he could do it as soon as 6-8 weeks if I was ready...but it was up to me. He said he knows alot of people do both at once, but he suggested with my health concerns he would reccomend doing them one at a time. He said he doesn't like to do them both at once because of the shock to the system. I feel better about doing one right now. The hospital said whatever the insurance didn't pay we could work out a payment plan. I am going to try and get the doctor to let me do PT in Ballinger 16 mi away instead of going 100 mi roundtrip everytime I need to go. He also said my knee's were pretty bad but he has seen worse...so relax and we will get things taken care of. I still have to find out when exactly I need to file for dissability...but I guess I can research that sight Wayne gave me to look at. I don't know if you have to be already off or if you can get the ball rolling before hand. It's so confusing. Anyway I feel good about my doctorand a bit better about the surgery. Well that's about it I guess. Except thanks for being there for me all of you. Love Oma

Oma,
I think being comfortable with your doctor and trusting that he is working for you and with you is 9/10 of the battle.
You can now get your dissability researched and then worry about the balance of the bills after your surgery.
You sound better than you did the other day! Good for you! I'm sure Mike feels better now that your questions were answered and that the doctor didn't talk to you with one hand on the doorknob!!!
Let us know when the surgery is. We're routing for you!
Love and hugz,
Margie

"Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful." -- Buddha
Oma,
If I read it right, you cannot file for disability until after you are unable to work. If you can persuade them to give you the paperwork beforehand, though, maybe you could have everything filled out, so that all you had to do was to file the paperwork right after the suirgery.
I get the impression that the government prefers to stall as long as possible, every step of the way.
Also, if your initial application is turned down, it can take a couple of years, or more, to get an appeal accepted. Therefore, I would suggest that you contact an attorney who specializes in SSD applications ASAP, and hire him/her to assist in the filing. It will greatly increase the odds of your application being accepted.
Love,
Wayne

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Oma,
I'm sure it needs to be one who specializes in that particular area of expertise. A lot of them list their specialties in their yellow page adds these days. You need one who specializes in disability claims.
The people who have tried to get disability for MC, for example, tell me that a good attorney is money well spent. It shouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars to hire one to file a claim, and it will normally allow you to be accepted and start drawing payments, much, much sooner than you would without the expert help.
Also, an attorney specializing in disability should be able to tell you what your chances are, and how long it will take to be accepted.

Wayne

OMA!
You are already over the first hurdle! Way to go! So glad to hear that you liked the doc. That makes SUCH a difference. Now you are on your way. If it were me, I'd do one knee at a time, too. The folks I have seen who did both at the same time were laid up for a very long time. It is much harder to rehabilitate a knee when you can't use the other one, IMHO! Plus you pretty much need someone to wait on you hand and foot for quite a while. Not to mention the fact that we MCers need to be able to move as quickly as possible to that toilet at times!

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
That sounds really good, Oma. My surgeon feels the same as yours about one at a time. My surgery was three weeks ago today and I am making progress. Each day I feel better and can do more, eg. tie shoes, fry an egg, walk to corner! don't laugh--those are little milestones! I still have 4 weeks of physical therapy to go.
We'll be with you every step of the way.
