so Tex I did get the hubbys bug, dont need antibiotcs at the moment but just in case I went to my medicine box to see what I had, I found 2 types of antibiotic, one my doctor prescribed for me as a "just in case" when we went to Mauritius last year so I googled it, Flucillin, to see if would suit if I get worse and could NOT believe my eyes when I saw the warnings, "can cause colitis"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!one for the bin I think! the other one I have is erythromycin stearate, cant find colitis warnings, whats your opinion, I seem to get chest infections easily with a head cold so want to be prepared, I just cant believe my GP would give me something that could cause colitis when I have it anyway, what antibiotic do we tolerate, I wouldnt want cipro as I have tendon damage in my ankle, thanks, Beni

Well, erythromycin stearate is a broad spectrum antibiotic, but unfortunately it also has a label warning about causing abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, etc. (though it doesn't specifically mention colitis). Remember that most antibiotics don't have much effect against viruses, so they are only helpful if a virus leads to a bacterial infection. If you should develop a bacterial infection from the virus, erythromycin might be helpful, but it would be much safer to use it (or another prescription drug) under the guidance of your doctor, because dosing and length of treatment can depend on the particular problem being treated.
It appears that Flucillin is only available in Ireland. Other forms of the drug are available in various countries around the world, but I don't believe that it's available in the U. S. If it is, I missed it. Because of that, I don't have any information on that one.
I'm sorry you ended up catching it, and I hope you don't have any complications with it. I'm just getting over a cold myself — the first one I've had in years. Apparently there are some very contagious viruses going around.

thanks, advise taken, I only take antibiotics if I really need them, right now I have a cold but past experience has made me be prepared, last infection in March lasted over 3 weeks because I left it too long, farming is finished now for the year so we are driving to Spain for the winter in 2 weeks and as it will take 5 days with ferries and road I want to be fit, I agree virus attacks seem stronger these days or are we just getting less able to fight them, Beni
