Could vertigo be auto-immune related?

Post by JenniferS »

I'd be curious to see how many others experience vertigo, and how many experienced this prior to mc meds.

This is now my biggest complaint, but it's not new, just more frequent. Prior to my diagnosis, I saw the dr. for vertigo. He told me he thought I likely had an inner ear virus, sent me home with motion sickness pills that didn't help.

It used to be the vertigo was maybe once a month, so I assumed it was cyclic related. However, lately, the vertigo has been every day, pretty much all day.

As I said in a previous post, I am wondering if it could be related to eyesight as I know I need glasses.

But ... I've had other auto-immune stuff crop up, and I'm just wondering if vertigo could be another facet.

Sorry to double post, but I found this article today. My eyesight problems are new--within the past year. This article seems to indicate that inner ear and eye sight problems could be caused by autoimmune issues, either the immune system attacking organs/body parts directly, or debris from attacks in other areas.

Hi Jennifer,
I don't know if what I experience was what you would call vertigo, but when I was at my worse with this disease I would experience moments that felt like the earth would drop 3 inches suddenly from underneath my feet. It was a very scary experience for me especially since I was away on a business trip and didn't know a soul where I was. This lasted for about a week and would occure 3-4 times per day. This was just before I found this website and went gluten free. I also must add that a week prior to this event the GI doctor had me in the hospital for an anorectal menometry test done. In retrospect, I know this is what caused me to get as sick as I was. What was that doctor thinking? There have been a few times since then that I would break out in a sweat and feel light headed and have to sink to my knees in order to avoid falling but thankfully this happens infrequently.

Hi Jennifer,

Yes, I sometimes experienced vertigo when I was reacting. Sometimes associated with nausea, and sometimes without. Fortunately for me, it didn't occur every day, because that is one symptom that would put me back to bed when it was serious. I wasn't able to work when I couldn't even keep my balance.

I'm not sure if it's caused by the MC itself, or by the neurological effects of years of untreated gluten-sensitivity. I suspect the latter, because it left me with peripheral neuropathy that I'm still trying to heal (it's much better now) 8 to 10 years later.

Unfortunately, most neurologists still don't realize that gluten can cause neurological symptoms/damage.

Vertigo can certainly be vision-related, but I don't know much about that. I just know that it definitely causes problems for some of us when our MC is active.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Jennifer, I had a bad bout of vertigo a few months ago. It would get better and then start up again. I started treating my thyroid and it has improved significantly. I can't say that the thyroid hormone definitely improved the vertigo but the timing seems to suggest it with me. My MC was in remission when it hit. Deb

Jennifer,

I never had vertigo until I was about 8 years into MC and had terrrible experiences for over a year while on Entocort. Stopped the meds and now it is just off and on but has not left entirely. Not sure if older age effect or the MC.

I had a horrible bout of vertigo years ago that lasted for several months. If I closed my eyes I would lose my balance. It was horrible. I went to a neurologist who did an MRI, found nothing, and called it "migraine-associated phenomenon" (crap non-diagnosis), even though I never had migraines. I had taken up swimming around that time and I'm confident now it was simple inner-ear crystal imbalance that worked itself out on its own. You might benefit from chiropractic or osteopathic adjustment, maybe acupuncture to get things balanced. Can't hurt.
