People with celiac have a 3-fold risk of lupus

Post by Zizzle »

Well, duh, I say. I think this research study grossly underestimates the risk and association, considering how many people go undiagnosed (for both Celiac and Systemic Lupus) for a long time.

it might be my cynical side - but isnt the celiac/gluten vaccination due to be released soon?

wouldnt the release of research like this 'encourage' people to have the vaccination?

(just googled it, as i wondered if the big pharma behind it was based in sweden where the study occurred, and interestingly - the trials for ImmusanT are occurring in USA, Australia and New Zealand.)

Oh, isn't that just dandy. We can take an injection or pop a pill now before we stuff ourselves with something that is toxic for us to make it less toxic for us? Big Pharma and the food industry are in cahoots. Nothing new, but I my response is the same, "Ugh!"

I'm a Celiac and this disturbs me. I don't even know what Lupus is.....just another thing for me to research. And what about the comment in regards to no animal protein. That's all I eat!! Jeez! Now I have to worry about Lupus cause of my current new diet?!

Terri,
Having celiac and the celiac gene HLADQ2 means you have a gene that predisposes to all other autoimmune diseases, including Systemic Lupus (SLE), although Lupus is probably the least prevalent among celiacs. The more common celiac-associated autoimmune diseases are Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Type 1 diabetes, autoimmune hepatitis, Sjogren's Syndrome, Vitiligo, pernicious anemia, and others. If it's true that all AI diseases begin in the gut, and intestinal permeability is to blame, then that would explain why celiac leads to other AI diseases -- because of the gut damage caused by gluten.

I'm HLADQ2, never confirmed celiac, and my docs have been checking for lupus for 8 years. Don't have it yet, but I do have a close cousin to Lupus, Dermatomyositis.

Dang Gluten!! I'm pre-diabetic right now so guessing that will be the next AI I get. Need to lower my carbs. That hepatitis one sounds scary.

I've never been tested for Lupus I don't think.

Terri,
The first screen for Lupus would be ANA (Anti-Nuclear Antibodies). If that were positive, then other tests could be run. But if you had Lupus, you'd probably know it. It can attack major organs, skin, blood vessels, joints, etc. AI disease is often a very slow to develop process (it was for me). I have the antibodies for autoimmune hepatitis, but the liver has tested normal for 8 yrs. Hope to keep it that way!!
