Potentially crucial clues about the mysterious aetiology of inflammatory bowel diseases may reside in the guts of indigenous Australians living in the outback, according to keynote research presented at the 8th Congress of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation in Vienna.
Indigenous Australians living traditional lifestyles have “a distinct gut microbial profile” compared to patients with Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, Dr Guru Iyngkaran, a gastroenterologist at Royal Melbourne Hospital, told the packed main hall.
This unique gut flora could explain why hardly any indigenous people in outback communities have IBD, Dr Iyngkaran said. Health surveys have revealed a high level of childhood infections but few cases of IBD, he said, adding that similarly low rates have been reported in indigenous Canadians
