probiotics

Post by ldubois7 »

Has anyone had trouble taking probiotics?

I have tried several different kinds, but always have severe gastro issues. I tried riding out the storm for a week (I read it sometimes takes a while as the battle goes on), but had to quit.

I know I need probiotics for gut health.

Has anyone had experience with this issue?

Thanks!

HI Idu,

I had severe reactions to probiotics when I was in my initial flare. It was only about 8 months later that I could tolerate them. Probiotics seem to be a mixed bag for us. Some folks are ok with them but some folks have reactions to them. Best wishes, Brandy

Thanks, Brandy. Maybe I'll try again in a few months. I have taken probiotics in the past, but it's been kind of hit or miss with the effects, so I never stuck with them.
I would think it should be a first line of defense for us. I can't comprehend why I can't handle them.
I appreciate your input.

HI!

I have never found a probiotic I could tolerate, and I have tried numerous times with numerous formulations.

Polly,

Thanks for the input. I can't figure this one out. It just doesn't make sense, but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

I didn't do well with them either. I think I read somewhere that it had to do with your body "seeing" the good bacteria as bad.... so the reaction to get rid of them happens. I wouldn't worry about needing them right now. You can definitely heal without them.

Hi everybody,

it's so strange that some of you have so much trouble tolerating probiotics. I can't do without them! Whenever I try to stop taking them, I get a flare... :s

I take Bion Transit, once a day on good days, twice a day on bad days.

This seems to work for me... So strange how everybody reacts differently.

Grts

It doesn't matter how many times you fall, but how many times you get up en go for it again. HOPE !!!!

Probiotics were a nightmare for me when I was in a flare. It made my D SO much worse! Once I improved, I am able to tolerate them just fine :)

I don't know how to tell if I am tolerating probiotics well or not. Doesn't seem to make any difference whether I take them or not. Both my internist and my gastroenterologist thought I should take them, so I am, but I can't say that I have any reaction one way or another. I don't have diarrhea, but I haven't had diarrhea since changing my diet and taking Pepto for 15 days. I am however, still quite "constipated". I use the term loosely, as I never go a day without a bowel movement of some kind, but it involves horrible straining and I never feel "emptied out"--mostly pencil type stools or roo-poo (I love that term--it describes it so well!).

I had a terrible reaction to a multistrain formulation, but have zero reaction to both Culturelle and S. Boulardi (a probiotic yeast). Makes me wonder if they are doing anything at all.

Jane, it sounds like you should be lowering your Pepto dosage a little.

Hi, Someday there will be customized probiotics based on the biochemistry of the body. But before that happens you can look up each strain of probiotic and their function. Jon

I took my last Pepto on January 4. I've been in this constant state of constipation ever since, which makes me wonder if I am not really in remission, but just converted to C instead of D. My joints still hurt a whole lot (including my wrists, which is new in the last week). The only things that have changed are less gut pain (most of the time) and less fatigue. Sometimes I wonder if I am just getting used to a "new norm".

Hi Jane,

Those symptoms remind me of casein sensitivity. Are you by any chance getting any dairy in your diet? If I recall correctly, dairy is claimed to be the number 1 cause of pediatric constipation, and it can definitely cause aching joints.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
