Low blood pressure

Post by Carriagehouse »

Is low blood pressure a side effect of going gluten free? Mine has been consistently low, most recently 90/60, and I'm wondering if there is a connection?

That's an interesting question. I've always had really low blod pressure, so I can't say it's gone lower since getting MC. Maybe Tex has the answer to that one.
How have you been lately?

Hi Leah
I've always had low blood pressure, too, but this seems especially low.

I am still recovering from my knee surgery - 6 weeks in and another 6 weeks of physical therapy to go. Went off the anti-inflammatories within the first two days, but my knee was so incredibly swollen I relented and went back on them, and I've been suffering with D ever since, but not the urgent kind so it is manageable. Have improved sleep and energy thanks to a few supplements prescribd by my ND and acupuncture. Looking forward to being able to walk and hike again - still not cleared to do anything but approved PT exercises.

How have you been?

Hi Leslie,

Years ago (before it's fatal crash), there was a thread on the Braintalk gluten sensitivity/celiac forum where several members posted that they had a significant improvement in their high blood pressure problem after they adopted the GF diet. Some of them were able to reduce their BP drug dosage, and a few were able to discontinue their BP treatment altogether, and throw away their pills.

Thanks, Tex. I guessed that going GF probably played a role, so what you're saying confirms that. I'm still not sure whether I should be concerned about the numbers, but I am otherwise feeling good so I guess I won't worry about it unless I start passing out ;) Thanks for the info!

Hmmm-m
I have taken blood pressure meds for 10 years and recently it has been very low. I called the PCP about it but he said to keep taking the meds unless I am light-headed. I wonder if I should conduct a little test by reducing/eliminating the meds and see how it goes.

I have had significant improvement in my BP since going GF. I had very low BP until I didn't. Suddenly it was very high. And I was symptomatic - headaches. I was put on BP meds, which I was on for several years.
During my med purge I decreased my BP meds while keeping an eye on my BP all the while. I have reduced the meds by 75%. Some days I don't need them at all.

My BP is still labile, but now it's low labile.

Hi everybody,

I've always had a bloodpressure of 12/8. Now, I consistently have 10/6. That's low for me. I started to get low bloodpressure a year ago, right around the time I started the GF diet. It's good to know that I have low bloodpressure because of the diet, and not because of another disease...

Grts

Leslie!

That's something to celebrate!!! Congrats! Very few diseases are caused by too low a blood pressure. It's a blessing to have, other than the occasional dizziness when standing up too quickly.

I don't know of any studies relating gluten to blood pressure, but as we've learned here, almost anything is possible. One member noted a significant improvement in her hearing after going GF, for example.

The main concern for MCers re low blood pressure is that it can be a sign of significant dehydration. But anyone with a consistently low BP is lucky indeed!

Love,

Polly

Leslie,

FYI, 12/8 kPa is the European equivalent of the U. S. reading of 90/60 mm Hg. 10/6 kPa is equal to 75/45 mm Hg.

Like Lesley, I had low blood pressure for most of my life until I didn't. I did gain some weight over the years so that might account for it but I'm not sure. As I'm working on my thyroid and adrenals I've seen some improvement but still need to see more.
