bloating

Post by ldubois7 »

Hello everyone!

What's with the bloating in the evening and through the night? Why that time period?

My D is in better control, but the wretched bloating is making me crazy! I have limited sugar, and eat very little fruit, and only in the morning. I'm not eating broccoli or any cruciferous veggies.

What's going on in me?

I sometimes get bloat in the evening also.... and wake up full of gas. Don't know why this time of day. Weird, huh? It isn't all the time for me and usually I can think of a reason it 'MIGHT" be happening. Sometimes I think it's because i have just eaten MORE food then i do at other times of the day... or maybe it's because it's when I finally sit down for any length of time.

???????

Leah,

I don't even eat anything past dinner, which is usually finished by 6 p.m. or so. It has to be something I'm not digesting well....but what?

Just wondered how many of us have this annoying issue.

I don't eat after dinner either, Leah. Belching and tooting usually start then and I frequently wake up during the night belching like Elsie the Cow. Attacks of gastritis also occur in the middle of the night. When my MC was at its worst, it was always much worse between midnight and 5 a.m. It doesn't seem to matter what I eat either. This disease is the epitome of inconsistency. Something that caused no reaction last week, can cause nausea and gas today.

Yep. You are describing what happens to me too! In fact, tonight I am curled into a tight ball "riding out" the worst of it. I could give any 5th grade boy a run for his money in the belching dept. too! The belching was really the first symptom of this lousy disease. My ex- gastroenterologist just told me I was swallowing too much air. Hmmm...so out of the blue for no reason I started swallowing air? I think not! Of course, everything fell into place once I understood that my gut just loves to hold things and ferment them all. I wonder if it doesn't have something to do with the gut being "fed up" (pun intended) with all the food I have eaten all day and it is just fermenting and churning away.

I am bloated all day, every day. Except when I first wake up. We will see if it continues after I change my diet.

Linda,

Based on what you said, the most likely suspect is the fructose in the fruit you are eating. Most of us don't digest it very well until after we recover, so as Jane mentioned, some of it ends up being fermented by bacteria in our colon. Many fruits also contain sugar alcohols, and since sugar alcohols are mostly unabsorbed by the small intestine, they also pass into the colon where they are fermented, causing gas and bloating, and often D.

Due to the fact that I can't eat most meats for protein, I've been having a smoothie in the morning that contains protein powder. I put 1/3 frozen banana, small handful of frozen blueberries, avocado, protein powder, & coconut milk in the smoothie. That's all the fruit I have in a day. Maybe I should cut out the fruit and invent a smoothie without it for a while.
I don't eat any added sugar alcohols. I do use a little honey for baking.

On another note, I found this great bread recipe I wanted to share...NO YEAST! I cut the honey down to 1/3 cup in the loaf, and may try 1/4 cup agave next time.

Anyone have protein suggestions for me? I can't eat chicken, turkey, beef, tuna, salmon. I eat a little pork, cod, haddock, venison, but it gets boring....

Linda,

What type powdered protein do you use? I have a problem with cramping and gurgling when I use those. I know it's difficult when it seems you eat the same thing all the time! Have you checked online for some paleo and other recipes to make your diet a little more interesting? That seems to help me quite a bit.

I have the occasional bloating as well. Can't figure out why though. It occurs right at bedtime as well. I thinking it's from overeating and I don't eat anything after 6:30. The other night I got heartburn and so took a couple of Tums. Within 30 minutes, my heartburn went away but got bad bloating instead. So I'm assuming it's something in my Tums. But this doesn't happen every time I take the Tums so go figure. Last night after eating some spaghetti sauce I got some very mild heartburn. Decided to pass on the Tums as I can deal with the heartburn much better than the bloating when I lie down. Heartburn went away after I did some relaxation techniques before lying down. Sometimes I wonder if it's all the rice and corn chips I eat. Still testing this out! Sometimes it seems impossible to figure out what is causing it. I would go lighter on your fruit though and see what happens.

Linda,

When I was recovering, I bought a smoothie maker with the idea of replacing my usual breakfast with a smoothie. I loved them, but they didn't love me. While I don't recall that they ever initiated a major flare, I never could find a combination that didn't cause me to have at least a minor reaction in the form of some degree of bloating and discomfort, so I finally gave up on them. I get the impression that most members have good experiences with them, though.

My bloating happens at any time of day. When I first wake up, it's when I feel the best so I take advantage of it and workout. But it can begin immediately after. It has decreased with the Entocort but whatever I did this past weekend, whether it be the alcohol on Friday or the meal on Saturday.... I suffered, even still today. The bloating, in my opinion, is the worst.

I would suspect the protein powder. I have a hard time finding ones I can tolerate. Rice protein seems so lame as a protein source...

How about lamb, shrimp, calamari/squid and duck? Those are some of my favorites.

Linda, why can't you eat chicken, turkey, beef, tuna and salmon? Did you have a reaction to all of them? Was it through Enterolab or MRT?

Joanne...yes, my Enterolab tests showed reactions to all 11 sensitivities tested. I have tried turkey, as a lot of people on this forum can eat it, and it seems to be ok the first day, but not reheated. I tried organic ground turkey burgers and that was a disaster for me. I don't love meat, but I am trying. I did buy ground lamb, and tried venison.

Zizzle...I haven't eaten shrimp in a while (bottom feeder:(), but I was thinking of trying it again. I've never had duck. I've always been a big veggies/fruit eater, and minimal poultry eater. I can't do soy, dairy, eggs, or gluten either, so vegan beans & soy for protein are out.

Tex...I LOVE smoothies! When I realized I couldn't do fresh fruit I stopped. But, started again when I received the lab results and had to cut out my almond butter on almond toast in the morning. Maybe I could cook my fruit and then freeze it to use?

Jean...I have Trader Joes Hemp protein. It was the only I could find that was casein and soy free! I only use half a serving due to the fiber in it.

Terri... I tried some yoga, too, last night. Don't think it made much of a difference.

I do feel my best in the morning after I 'go' and before I eat. Then the whole cycle begins again.
Do you all think the morning meal may be whats causing the bloating at night?

Thanks all for chiming in...love to hear from you!
