felt great camping. Any thoughts?

Post by Leah »

Okay, so I went camping for three nights this past weekend. I felt great and had normans ( which mostly elude me). I even drank vodka all three days! I was careful with food, but I usually am. I only took my thyroid med, Allegra, and one Histame a day (no other supplements).

So, now I am thinking a few things. Tell me what you think please.
1. One or more of my other supplements are bothering me
2. The Histame is working and now that's it's been a few weeks on it, I am less inflamed
3. There was less cross contamination there then what I get at home?

My plan is to add one supplement in every few days to see if I can find the culprit. Today was vitamin D.

Thanks ,
Leah

Leah,

I think it's remarkable that you went camping, period! And you drank vodka! OMG! How brave is that?

Surely you're less inflamed and the other supplements can definitely be the culprit. When you reintroduce, I would do more than a few days. It takes longer for me to know what does it. So, go slow...so that you don't relapse.

Good news!

Hi Leah,

Well, a camping trip can't go much better than that, can it?

It's certainly possible that any or all of the items you listed could have a bearing on your issues, but I agree with you and Monique that the supplements may be the main suspect.

Unless you keep wheat flour in your home (or at work), I would say that cross-contamination is the least likely suspect.

If you're unable to track down a culprit, consider drinking vodka every day.

Thanks for an intriguing update,
Tex

Leah,
I think I've been reacting to fish oil softgels. Not sure if you take any, but every time I remember to take them, I seem to get a mild reaction.
I glutened myself and my husband last night with a totally homemade meal and I'm stumped. I think it had to be one of the spices I used, unless my Bob's RedMill Sorghum flour used for coating fish (caught by my husband) was somehow contaminated. It's hard to accept that even we can get contaminated at home when we think we're being careful.

A thought about camping...maybe you were so relaxed the normans followed? Or maybe you walked around barefoot and slept on the ground, getting the soothing benefits of grounding?

Leah - I am with Tex on continuing with the Vodka!

Zizzle - I cannot tolerate sorghum flour or even Red Bridge beer made with sorghum - it just destroys me. Could be that too!

Love, Maggie

Hi Leah, Sounds like you had a great stress-less camping trip. Could it be the less stress that helped? Zizzle, When, I cook fish I use crushed Glutino g-f crackers for topping, extra virgin oil, parsley and baked at 350 for thirty minutes. Tastes better than the fish I ate before going g-f. I used this recipe for a dinner conference and had many good comments. Jon

Jon,
Are there Glutino crackers that are dairy free? I feel like I haven't found them, or I gave up on Glutino for other reasons.

I eat a good deal of sorghum in various products with no ill effects whatsoever. The fact that my gluten-sensitive hubby was also affected means it's not the sorghum, unless it's contaminated sorghum. It is a new bag I bought recently.

My best fish coating is finely ground arborio rice (which I mixed with the sorghum last night). Comes out crispy!

Zizzle,

One of the problems with sorghum is that it is very easy to contaminate during harvest, storage, and handling. Grain elevators never clean out their conveyors when they switch from one grain to another during loadout operations. They just switch the gate openings at the storage tanks, so there is always an overrun of the first grain into the second. The other bad problem is that sorghum is roughly the same size as wheat kernels. True, they're round, and wheat is oblong, but due to their similarity in size and specific gravity, I can tell you from 20 years of experience in the grain cleaning business, that it is very, very difficult to separate wheat from sorghum. It's much easier to remove wheat from corn, for example.

Personally, I don't believe that sorghum contamination with wheat (or some other glutenous grain) is very common, but it does happen, on a regular, though limited basis. With the right equipment and a lot of careful effort, its possible get maybe 90 to 95 % separation, but total separation is impossible, so once wheat gets into sorghum, some of it is going to stay there. And as you know, 90 to 95 % is nowhere near good enough where food sensitivities are involved.

Maggie,

I seem to be able to tolerate sorghum now, but back when I was reacting, I couldn't tolerate anything made with sorghum flour, either.

Love,
Tex

I knew someone was going to say something about stress..... but I have to say that my normal life is not very stressful. Plus, I was a bit worried about how I would feel during the trip, so I should have been MORE stressed going away. There was also a heat wave during the trip ( 100 degrees!). We had to basically sit our butts in the stream all day to stay cool. AND i got my period ( i know, TMI)! So was I less stressed? I don't think so. I did have a really good time though :)

We are going to a different spot in three weeks with the grown kids. I will definitely be bringing the vodka!

Zizzle, I have only added D back in. Next week, I will try the fish oil.

Hi Leah,

I just laughed out loud at your TMI! I love the detail! Yes, doesn't seem like a lack of stress was the answer.

I am going camping next week in New Mexico and I'm hoping for SIMILAR results! (e.g, normans).

I'm so happy you had such a nice camping trip...well despite the heat. With me the culprit would likely be fish oil. I know you take those. I have to laugh though that when reading your post I had thought the same as Tex.....KEEP DRINKING THE VODKA....lol!!! I'm having a 4th of July party on Saturday evening....will add that to my list.....lol. I guess vodka is a safe thing for us to drink? I read online to avoid wine...that it's likely contaminated. Guess it's just water with lemon for me during my party...boring! Just too scared to try alcohol.

So you've been home a few days now? Still have Norms?

Leah, I'm so happy you had such a good time! I agree it might be no supplements or less stress. Stress is a strange thing, I think, and many times we probably don't realize when we are or not. But also, I noticed on trips I feel better than usual too, especially if i spend more time outdoors and in the sun. And there is the added bonus of not focusing as much on our intestines.
