Pentasa

Post by Jskaggs »

Good evening,
I went to my GI today, he changed Budesonide to Pentasa. Has anyone used this drug and was it effective? I am really having bloating and cramps and the D came back on Sunday. Oh, to be normal or whatever that might be.

Hope everyone has a good night.

Hi Jane,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having symptoms again. GI docs don't seem to prescribe Pentasa to treat MC very often (I'm not sure why), but it should work better than Asacol, because unlike Asacol, Pentasa doesn't contain any lactose.

Here are a couple of links to old threads where Pentasa is discussed. In the thread at the second link that I've listed below, I wrote 3 posts. In the second post, I described how the encapsulation mechanisms of the various mesalamine-based medications actually work when delivering the mesalamine to where it is needed in the intestines.

Thank you Tex for the threads. It will be interesting to see if Pentasa works as well as Budesonide has. I have side affects with Budesonide and that is why my doctor changed the medication. I do appreciate your help.

Jane,

You're not alone. A lot of members here have intolerable side effects from budesonide — far more than are listed in the test trial results published for the drug.

Good luck with the Pentasa.

Jane,

I take Pentasa and have for 2 years now. It does help but diet helps the most. I like it because not only does it help but it is not a steroid and is not systemic. It coats the digestive tract from duodenum to rectum and reduces the inflammation, but like I said diet is the key. I am hoping to be off the Pentasa soon.
