"Food Chain" article

Post by HockeyMom »

Hi all. I'm doing well and pop in occasionally to see how you all are doing. I work for a large hospital chain and every few months we get a magazine sent from corporate "h2u Health To You Magazine ". An article in this latest one is titled "Food Chain" and goes on about digestive stuff in general. Under celiac disease.."This autoimmune condition is triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. There's no cure, but a gluten free diet prevents the immune response that can damage the intestine. People who aren't see sensitive to gluten should avoid gluten free diets, Dr Gitlin (GI doc at Mtn View Hospital in Las Vegas ) says, because they often include lots of carbohydrates and unnecessary calories ".

Huh??? I thought this was pretty funny. Tomorrow morning I get to do the yearly weigh in and blood draw at work to qualify for my health insurance coverage. The blood work is always fine but I've been flagged the past 2 years for being under the BMI minimum (5'7" and 116#). Doesn't look like gluten free is loading me up on calories....

Hi HockeyMom,

You're right, doc Gitlin appears to be a real comedian. One certainly wouldn't find any carbohydrates or unnecessary calories in foods that contain gluten. Not! And contrary to his obviously biased (and unfounded) claim, most members here seem to have the same problem that you're having — wight loss on the diet, not weight gain.

Thanks for the update, and congratulations on your good health.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I never, EVER thought i would say gaving droopy drawers would bother me. I should buy new clothes but i keep waiting to go back to the normal me. Dont think that will ever happen! I was always about twenty pounds overweight for as long as i can remember. Weight watching is no longer an issue for me. Now i feel like i need to tone up because my skin is baggy in places. Any day now all my energy should return and i can get back to normal day to day activities. Haha.
