Unusual reaction to gluten (I think)

Post by mcnomore »

For several years I would get a reaction (multiple loose bowel movements) whenever I spent more than 15 minutes in some stores, offices, or homes. If I left the building as soon as I felt the reaction coming on I would be ok. I thought I had multiple chemical sensitivity.

My allergist connected it to gluten and sure enough since going gluten free I don't have the reaction.

Interesting! I had the same reaction when I entered large stores (Target, Home Depot, department stores), but haven't noticed it in a while. I figure it's all the chemical scents, new clothes offgassing, etc. I should never work in retail!

Even more interesting that you also have experienced the same thing. I wonder what's going on to cause the reaction. We should keep in touch regarding this. I'll ask my allergist more about why she thought it was gluten related.

I've seen several Potty People report the same thing. I think we do chalk it up to chemical sensitivities, but it's so strange that it produces urgent D!! Come to think of it, it has happened to me in homes that use lots of chemical air fresheners too. Glade products and the like are pure poison!!

Hi, I have noticed the same reaction. I always thought it was gravity that caused the urgency after the drive to the store or mall and then walking around. Jon

Have you noticed any change for the better since going gluten-free?

I just saw this:

-Avoid places where drywall is being installed. If you need to have work done on your house, have someone else do it and stay away until the work site's been thoroughly cleaned up. Don't use ready-made spackling putty or compound, either, since most are wheat-based.

-Exercise caution around store-based bakeries. Some of these seem fine for me, while others get me every time. I think the difference may be in the ventilation systems. If you can smell the bread and cookies baking, you may be risking an airborne reaction.

Saw this on another forum:

I was just told by a pathologist: latest idea of the link is that the body becomes malnourushed due to coeliac, then craves certain minerals etc and consequently absorbs tham ANY WAY it can.. including from pollutants and chemicals. Then the MCS develops. Has anyone heard of this??

WHOA. My autoimmune skin flare started a couple months after I moved into my newly remodeled "green home". I spent months visiting the worksite and was covered in construction dust at times. I've often wondered whether offgassing of the new building materials (even though most are low/no VOC) might have set off my flare.

I can't seem to find wheat as an ingredient in joint compounds, but the other chemicals sure are concerning! I was probably getting lots of formaldehyde in the early months living in my house.

The year i was dx with MC we gutted our cabin up north which created all kinds of construction dust/debris. There was water damaged and mold growth in some areas. This process took several years. I became very chemical sensitive and it still lingers to this day. We still have smaller projects to do and i find painting, staining, and polying unbearable at times and it takes a long time for it to subside. Bummer. We save a lit of money by doing the work ourselves but its become an issue for my health.

I never got loose bowel movements. But i would get extremely bloated and have urgency. But after being awhile out of the store, I would get better, and not have to use the bathroom.
Now I just try to get in and out, instead of messing around at a store.

Hi Mcnomore, I have been gluten, soy, refined sugar and diary free for ten years. One month after going g-f the severe bone pain in the thighs and shoulder stopped and the arthritic pain in the knees was gone. I never had more than five BM's a day. I found that standing realigns the internal organs and allows the stool to pass down the colon. When, the stool is firm the muscles can hold it, but when it is lose the muscles have little effect and it passes easily. Thus, the many trips to empty the colon. I have found that stress will cause urgency. Now, I use potty stool method of relaxing the spincher muscle by getting into the squating position which allows the stools to pass easier and helps with elimination. When, the colon is inflammed the normal absorption of water is blocked and the stools are lose or wet. I have found that eating a Paleo diet except for brown rice as a carb has helped keep the inflammation under control and the stools are bigger and well formed. Jon

Here is an article on the link between multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and gluten intolerance!
