weaning from entocort question

Post by CaitiCakes »

hi, all,

my doc put me on entocort and i followed up with him at week 4, reporting some improvement to him. he wanted me to continue at 9mg/day for 2 more weeks (total of 6 weeks altogether), then wean down to 6mg/day for another 2 weeks before following up with him.

a few days ago, i was thinking this plan might not be so bad after all, as i was having every other day normans and no abdominal cramps for about 2 weeks, following a gluten and dairy free diet.

but i accidently glutened myself on saturday, and here it is tuesday, and ive had a few stools the past three mornings, ranging from normans to D. reading through related posts, i see many people warning against weaning from entocort too soon, so my plan is to wait for this to calm down before weaning and just explain that to the doc when i go in, but

how am i supposed to know when it's the right time to wean from the entocort?

thanks in advance

Hi Caiti,

Most members here who use Entocort decide that it's time to lower the dosage when they begin to experience constipation. It's the most reliable method that we've found, though I'm not sure that your GI doc will agree with that (especially if he's one of the many doctors who don't recognize the connection between MC and food sensitivities).

The key seems to be to allow enough time for the gut to do a significant amount of healing, and then during the final stages of weaning off the budesonide, taper the dose very, very slowly, in order to prevent a rebound effect (of inflammation) as mast cell numbers begin to increase again.

You're very welcome,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

HI Caiti. I think your doctor was on the right track because he was keeping in touch with your progress. We have found here that if one weans too fast, a relapse is likely because there just hasn't been enough time for your gut to heal. 4-6 months total seems to be about average. I was on 9 mg for a month, 6mg. for a month, 3mg for two months, and the final two months were spent SLOWLY weaning and fine tuning the diet. What can also happen is if you wean off too soon and then restart the drug, it doesn't seem to work as well each subsequent time .

Feel better soon
