Pentesa

Post by jmayk8 »

Hi friends!
I wouldn't say I am in a full flare but, I havent been having good weeks. Ive done the elimination diets and different meds and I am always good for a few weeks but, then I am back to square one.
Ive tried tons of meds, all again seem to work for a few weeks then stop. Entocort never worked for me and neither prednisone.
My Dr called in Pentesa today and when I called to see if it was ready for pick up, they said it was going to be $400!!!! My ins only pays 50%. So I said forget it. Is there somewhere I can get it less expensive?
Thanks,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

The active ingredient in Pentasa is mesalamine (same as Asacol, Lialda, Colazal, Apriso, etc.). The inactive ingredients will be different, though. You might check the price, to see how much generic mesalamine would cost.

Another possibility is sulfasalazine, which is an old, and therefore cheap, drug. But besides the fact that it's a sulfa drug, your body would have to manufacture the active moiety, 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), from the inactive form contained in sulfasalazine. Sulfasalazine doesn't work well for many people, unfortunately.

Im okay.
Still not on any meds but, I feel like if I was on a small maintenance dose I would be 100%
It's just so frustrating!
Thanks for asking!
