advise on blood work
Hi!
I have my 6 month appt. this week with my GP. What test should I suggest, to be able to see if I am deficient in anything like vitamins/minerals etc.?
It was the beginning of April when I got my Enterolab results and stopped eating most foods. I am still working on finding the right combination, and have not had veggies/fruit in many months now. I eat 3 meats (venison, haddock, & turkey), Teff flour waffles, sunflower or pumpkin seed butter, a little coconut. I've had 1/2 potato for dinner at night for a week, and have noticed gurgling through the night and in the morning.....so, I should probably eliminate the night shade... :(
Just wondered what you suggest as far as blood work & additional testing. My favorite doctor has moved on, and this is his replacement...I hope she is open minded when it comes to what I have to tell her about MC!

Hi Linda,
I've been pondering the same request for my next appointment.
I plan on asking for testing for vitamins D and E, if possible, B vitamins (usually standard), potassium (also standard), calcium, and a DEXA scan, which is a bone density test.
I have entered the nutrients of the foods I eat each day into a spreadsheet I created. There are programs and applets that you can use for this, but some of the foods I eat, such as my homemade muffins, are not in the databases, so I decided it was just as easy to enter my ingredients and figure it out myself. What I found was that I was low in potassium. My multivitamin made up for the other nutrients which were low. When I had my blood work done, it confirmed that my potassium was borderline, so I think the spreadsheet is pretty accurate.
It would help if you had some idea of which nutrients you are lacking so you could narrow the test list. If you'd like, I could send you my spreadsheet. It does take a while to enter all the numbers. Some people might find it tedious, but I'm a retired math teacher and I love working with numbers and detail. I used this database for the values: http://nutritiondata.self.com/

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Thanks for fixing the link, Tex. I don't know what was wrong with it, but it doesn't matter if it's fixed.
Here's another government website which seems to have a lot of possibilities. Just ignore their pyramid recommendations.
https://www.supertracker.usda.gov/default.aspx - Home page
https://www.supertracker.usda.gov/foodtracker.aspx - Track Food and Activity
It looks like you can save your data and preferences and generate individualized reports. Plus, under the Track Food and Activity option is a link for a Nutrients list for individual foods.

The "ht" was missing at the front of the URL. It probably just somehow failed to get highlighted when you copied it.Gloria wrote:Thanks for fixing the link, Tex. I don't know what was wrong with it, but it doesn't matter if it's fixed.
You're most welcome, and thanks for the links.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Well, I saw my doc today....actually my doc left and I saw the new replacement doc....which I just found out today that she is leaving and there will be yet another doc next time. I guess gone are the days when doctors were part of the community and grew old with the families that they served. It is sad!
Anyway, she suggested I see an allergist/immunologist doctor due to the limited foods I can eat. I have done Enterolab and MRT testing. I am extremely sensitive to everything!
What do you all think? Would it be any help to me?
Thanks!

Maybe, if you can find one trained at Brigham and Women's Hospital by Dr. Maria Castells. Otherwise, most immunologists/allergists don't have the foggiest idea how mast cell issues relate to digestive system issues. IgA reactions aren't even on most allergists' radar.

But that's just my unprofessional opinion.
