Tolerate Alcohol?

Post by DJ »

Do people with MC tolerate alcohol? If not, do people with MC have a long history of alcohol intolerance prior to having MC? I have always been intolerant = stomach ache, diarrhea (long before MC) and a hangover after one or two drinks (really). Every two or three years I take a crack at it again with the same results. Now that I have MC, I will never expose myself to such an irritant again. I'm wondering if this is part of the MC story. I have a sister who is highly intolerant of alcohol and she is the poster girl for autoimmune illnesses.

I have always been intolerant of alcohol, too. I get very queasy & sick to my stomach, so I stopped drinking many years ago, long before the MC diagnosis. It could be the histamines in the wines, the gluten/yeast in the beer.

Hi DJ,

I enjoy my alcohol beverages, and never had a problem until LC? My regular drink was a sea breeze, which is vodka, cranberry and grapefruit juice. I can't touch that now, but maybe someday off in the very healed future!!

I drink white wine (Pinot Grigio), and have no problem. I did try to go without it, and was no better, so I
decided to sit back, and enjoy.

DJ,

Excessive use of alcohol is claimed to be the leading cause of the leaky gut syndrome, and leaky gut is closely connected with MC, so probably alcohol always has the potential to cause problems for many of us. For some of us, leaky gut doesn't play a role as significant in our MC experience, so alcohol may be better tolerated by those individuals.

For me, sugar appears to be the primary cause of leaky gut, but alcohol has always had too powerful of an effect on me, so I never developed a taste for it. Sugar is apparently the second main cause of leaky gut. I'm guessing that increased intestinal porosity due to sugar makes me more vulnerable to excessive alcohol absorption in my gut.

Lori,

The grapefruit juice (and to some extent, the cranberry juice) is probably the reason why that drink causes problems for you now. Most of us can't handle citric acid until after we have recovered.

Tex,

Well then, a SeaBreeze is certainly something I will look forward to in the far future!! (and if it doesn't work, that will be OK too). :dancingpenguins:

No alcohol for me, either. Never liked it. I always thought drinks would taste better without the alcohol.

Guess that still doesn't explain why remission w/o drugs is so elusive for me.
