Osteoporosis .... Yikes!

Post by DJ »

Shortly after my MC diagnosis, I also learned that I have osteoporosis. I had lost height. It seems that within the past six months I've lost another half inch in height. That is huge! I have a dairy free, low veggie diet. I take calcium and I don't get much exercise at all. I used to be a power walker but I now have exhaustion.

I took Entocort 9 mg for 2 months, 6 mg 2 months, and just completed 3 mg for 2 months. I have blank capsules and planned to make my own Entocort 2 mg then 1.5 mg then 1 mg before going off around February 1. I'm afraid to stop the Entocort quickly because my bathroom stability is pretty good but it's fragile. The exhaustion is also a factor and I don't know if that would be better with or without Entocort. My body pain is greatly lessened since I began Entocort and remains that way, even on 3 mg. When I reduce Entocort, I have 2 weeks of strange body discomforts and headaches then things are good again. I wonder if the reduced body pain is from going GF, DF, SF, NF or if it's from the Entocort.

I'm very upset about the rapid bone loss. I don't know what to do

The biggest cause of bone density loss in most developed countries is malabsorption due to untreated gluten sensitivity. The problem is virtually never due to inadequate calcium in the diet, because most diets contain more than enough calcium. We're just unable to utilize it because of our compromised digestive system and the resulting vitamin D and magnesium deficiencies. As your gut slowly heals, your malabsorption problem will fade away, and your bone density issue should stabilize.

Be sure that you take plenty of vitamin D and some sort of magnesium supplement for insurance, because those 2 items determine whether or not our body can utilize the calcium in our diet to maintain optimum bone health.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks Tex. I'm taking calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and a multivite. Should I take a particular type of calcium?

Joe steered me towards taking these -
Osteo-Genics and Ostera
Made by Metagenics.
They have the right amount of magnesium, Vits D and K for max absorption.
I do take extra Vit D because of my GERD.

Not cheap, but IF I remember to take them I am getting the right proportions of each.

Thanks Lesley. I'm hating that I've had so much bone loss.
